Purpose of our English corner

作为一个致力于青少年赋能教育，旨在释放青少年特殊的智力和道德潜能，使其成为自身发展和社区福祉的积极推动者的机构。我们自己也在学习如何成为自身发
展和社区福祉的积极推动者。
英语角是我们为此而做的一种努力，希望通过组织定期的，围绕精神主题的讨论，促进更多朋友的发展，促进朋友们之间的友谊与团结的氛围，同时激发朋友们学
习与服务的热忱。
As an organization dedicated to junior youth empowerment education,
whose aim is to release intellectual and moral potential in junior
youths and to help them become active members of the community who
take responsibility both for their own development and the development
of their community, we ourselves are also learning the same thing we
want to help junior youth to achieve--to become active members of the
community that take responsibility both for our own development and
for the development of our community.
This English corner is one of the results of this effort. Through this
regular event, we hope to contribute to the development of our
friends, to foster friendship and unity, and, most importantly, to
fuel the passion for study and service to others.

How would you imagine a world without human beings？

1. Do you think the world is progressing? How or why not?
2. How would you define progress and development?
3. What do you think is the role of human beings in the change of the
world? Are we trouble makers or human resources for the betterment of
the world?
4. Could a trouble maker and a human resource be in the same
individual?
5. What decides whether the same individual is to be a trouble maker
or a human resource?

3.What do you think is the role of human beings in the advancement of
the world?

I keep using the word ‘inspiring’ to describe the English corner and I
start to hear more friends mention it too. I guess we will appreciate
that more and more as our learning about the art of consultation
continues.

I am excited to share what I have learned last night:

The world without human beings

The world without human beings may be more natural in a way, maybe
with more peaceful environment. But it would be like a nice picture,
however beautiful, it is not fully adequat to tell the story behind
it. Underneath all the visible troubles human beings are causing and
suffering from seems to lie the great treasure of human consciousness.
That is like the fruit of the whole nature.
As Jasmine felt, even if there are no human beings on the earth,
sooner or later, there will appear some form of high intelligence and
wisdom. It won’t be just a repetition of meaningless cycles. Right,
the mother nature needs to have its fruit, though it won’t come
easily. No pains, no gains! :)

Is the world progressing?

There are clear ups and downs.

Some interesting observations and comments made by the friends:
Things we did with much difficulties become easier with advanced
technology.
We have also created means to kill millions! It’s a new problem.
It’s easier to see many different and interesting things when you
traveled in the past. Now everywhere is more or less the same! We lost
diversities. (-World traveller: Sebastien)
There is good things about that too, everywhere becomes more
homelike. But you get stuck at home. You can’t get out of home. It’s
less interesting on the other hand.:)
We are facing many challenges like never before, such as increasingly
more diseases, mental problems, a lot of stress in the big cities,
weakening moralities…

But are we going up in the long run?

Is having challenges a sign of going down or going backward? Are
challenges and opportunities not often coming together?
I often think about the growth of an individual to understand the
advancement of society. Think about junior youth who are leaving
behind childhood and entering into adulthood. They are at that crical
period called adolecence. What do we know about that period?
Challenges, confusions, problems, difficult but important time for an
individual, right? But these are not all bad, in fact they are
necessary preparation for maturity. Becoming aware of the problems is
a necessary step for growth. Isn’t the society at large the same?

HP or HR? (Human problems or Human Resources?)

What decides whether an individual becomes a trouble maker or a human
resource for the advancement of the world?
Think about a company. It often has a Human Resource department. What
do they do? Human Resource training is one thing they do. It helps the
employees to become qualified human resources for achieving the
company’s goals.

But we are not talking about human resources for a company. We are
talking about the human resources for the advancement of the world.So
what is the training we have for that purpose?

Almost all friends thought about education. Then we further
questioned, what kind of education? We have many different types of
education already: science, art, various majors for different
purposes, divers opinions hold and expressed by different people,
through medias, products, all kinds of lisms.The question is “Are they
adequate?”and “What is missing?”

All these education serve certain purposes. They have their value and
truth.But they are just like different opinions a junior youth would
hear from different people. The challenge lies in how the youth can
get proper guidence to better treat or use these different opinions,
informations, tools in response to his real and essential need. It’s
easy to get lost and not be aware of one’s real and essential need,
especially with so much distractions.

For the youth, the clear goal is to grow into maturity.We can have
another discussion to define maturity!:)
For the people of the world, our clear goal is to grow into the
maturity of society together. It would be worthwhile defining that
maturity together too!:)

According to what can we define that? I can think of the following:
world history, scentific discoveries over the years, generations of
philosophers’ reflection, religious teaching, mistakes we have made in
our effort to achieve progress, new awareness we have gained in the
advancement of the world...

I am a little too excited:)

Human being is the unique participant in this world of existence. Born with latent capabilities and potentialities, has the gift of understanding and the power of will. How do we think we should utilize these gifts and capabilities? We are not puppets, we do make decisions. The outcome of that decision bounces back to us. We are the recipient of our own making. Our own irresponsible act can victimize ourselves and others. It is as simple as that, we just want to complicate things due to our self-insistence, self-love, self-pity, self-indulgence....
