Okay folks, the planning is done, the location and sponsor are set, and we're ready to announce the meeting!  I'd like to thank Nick Mucci and Ben Clayton for their help in getting this first meeting off the ground, as well as our great presenters and the others that volunteered.

The meeting will be on May 8th from 11am to 1pm.  Lunch will be provided courtesy of Tallgrass Technologies.  Garmin has graciously offered to provide meeting space.  Our presenters are Frank Wiles and Austin Morgan.  Garmin and Tallgrass Tech will also be giving presentations.

You will soon get a meeting maker from Google Calendar.  It's very important that folks indicate that they're coming, as we need to get an estimate of how much food we'll need and we need to let Garmin know that you're not terrorists so that they'll let you in.

If you are bringing a guest not on the mailing list, please indicate that when RSVPing.  If something changes after you RSVP, please let me know.

Thanks, and see you there!
Jeffrey.

Sponsor:  Tallgrass Technologies
Location:  Garmin HQ, 1200 E. 151st Street, Olathe, KS 66062, rooms 3450 and 3550 (map it)
Time:  Friday, May 8th, 11am to 1pm

Presenter:  Garmin
Title:  "How Garmin uses Linux"

Presenter:  Tallgrass Technologies
Title:  "Sun Open Storage"

Presenter:  Frank Wiles
Title: "Basic PostgreSQL administration and backup"
Summary: "PostgreSQL is the most advanced Open Source relational
database. Frank will quickly cover basic PostgreSQL administration
from setting up a new database, creating and restricting users, two
simple backup methods, and how to create a warm standby database
server."

Presenter:  Austin Morgan
Title: "Doing more with Less, using Mylyn to add order to multitasking."
Summary: "Today multitasking is the default mode of operation. Unfortunately
multitasking is highly inefficient leading to work backlog and frustration.
Mylyn is an Eclipse plugin designed to assist in allowing you to focus on a
single task in a multitasking world while still achieving the goals of your
company. In this presentation Austin Morgan will show you how to take
advantage of this tool both while developing software in Eclipse and System
Administration activities."

Some folks have been reporting problems accepting the meeting request.

If you are using Outlook (poor bastard), cut and paste the "yes" (or "no" or whatever) link into a web browser to bypass Outlook.  If you are in, and it seems to be hanging processing your request - don't click again.  It's an event with almost 400 people on it, so Calendar takes a while to perform actions on that event.  Give it a minute or two.

Just a reminder, the meeting is a little over two weeks away.  Currently I have 41 RSVPs and 10 "maybes".  In a little over a week I'm going to be providing a headcount for the sponsor so that they can order food.

NOTE: you do not have to RSVP in order to be able to come, but if you do not keep in mind there might not be enough food for you.  So please RSVP, even if it's "no" or "maybe".

If you need another meeting maker, please let me know.

Thanks,
Jeffrey.

Just a reminder, the meeting is coming up in a week and a half.  PLEASE RSVP.  We need to know who is or may be coming so that food can be purchased and so that Garmin knows you're coming.  So far we have about 50 confirmed attendees.

I'm going to need a couple of volunteers that are willing to come to the meeting at 10:30 to help set up.  I doubt it will be much work - probably just some moving of tables around.  I'll also need one of them to be willing to sit near the door and help folks get signed in.

Food will be from Oklahoma Joe's BBQ (it's very good).  We will be asking folks that come to sign in and use a nametag, since most of us haven't met in person before.  We won't be asking for email addresses or any other personal information, we just want to get a list of who came so we can get an idea of how good the meeting makers are working.  This information won't be shared with anyone else.

Again, if you think you might come please RSVP so we can make sure to have adequate food.

think I am the best suited for helping sign people in.

Can you please use the meeting maker to register it?  There are too many people for me to keep track.  If Michael is not on the mailing list, just put yourself down as you + 1 guest.

I'll send out a meeting maker to everyone again.  Thanks!

Just a reminder folks, the meeting is THIS FRIDAY!

It's located at Garmin's headquarters, and starts promptly at 11am.  The room will be open starting at 10:30, and we will have use of the rooms until 2pm, though the meeting proper will end at 1pm.

Garmin's HQ is located at 151st and I-35, and is a large campus.  We will be entering through the North entrance, which is in the big tower at the North side of their campus.  There is some visitor parking there, and Nick says the top floor of the nearby parking garage is also open for visitors.

Here is a Google Maps link:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=1200+E.+151st+Street+Olathe,+KS+66062&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=50.956929,65.830078&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16&iwloc=A

Garmin's HQ is a secure facility, and you will need to sign in at the receptionist's desk, wear a nametag, and be escorted to the room.  Nick Mucci and other Garminites will be helping us with that.  Just check in at the desk and someone will come get you.  We are in rooms 3450 and 3550.

Lunch will be Oklahoma Joe's BBQ, and will be served at noon.

See you guys on Friday!
Jeffrey.

I was apparently a bit unclear.  This is an open sign-in at the receptionist's desk.  If you bring a friend or haven't confirmed the meeting maker you won't be turned away, though we'd like to ask that if you haven't RSVPed that you please go to the back of the food line in case we have a shortage.

This comment may be a little mistimed, but the .ics file never gave me a chance to add an additional attendee for the two of us that will be attending. I was able to click to indicate that I was attending, and then I clicked again (for the other guy), but I'm not sure that it registered two different people at the far end. I don't know if this was due to some missing functionality in the Zimbra desktop I use for email and calendar, or something else.

My suggestion, if it is/would be possible in the future anyway, is have some way to view the list to see if names have been added correctly.

Kendric, I don't know if the question and answers time was cut for
time, or if I shouldn't ask, but I do have a few questions related to
Garmin, Linux, and engineering education:

What Linux related things does Garmin wish newly graduated engineers
knew more about? Is there anything LUGs and colleges can do to help?

That sounds like an excellent question for Lisa to answer...would folks be OK with her responding on list even though she is a recruiter?

Thanks again to everyone for coming. I'm really happy that so many
people came together to make this a success.

Lisa can probably better answer questions about what Garmin wants from
new recruits than I can. I'm a Linux developer in Software
Engineering so if you're curious about what its like "in the trenches"
I might be able to help.

To be honest, the intent of the "please don't post as a recruiter" "policy" isn't to prevent useful information from being disseminated or prevent someone from participating in discussion simply due to their job position.  The reluctance to having recruiters on the list is due to past abuse by some (harvesting email addresses and contacting people off-list, spamming job postings to the list, fishing for Windows expertise, and so on).

I don't think Lisa is looking to do anything of the sort and I'd welcome her insight into what companies like Garmin are looking for.  She's not soliciting applications, she's not spamming job postings, she's not hounding people off-list.  She's saying, "at a company like Garmin, and I'm sure any Linux heavy shop, the following skills are going to be looked for.  If you're interested in a job in this industry using Linux, these are the sorts of things you need to know..."  I think that's perfectly acceptable and actually quite appropriate for this sort of forum.

In this case, Lisa isn't speaking as a recruiter, she's speaking as someone who is knowledgeable about the industry and providing useful information to others in the same field.  ie; She's posting as herself, not as a head-hunter.  Does that make sense?

Anyway, those are my thoughts on it.

Here is some feedback from one of the managers in Software Engineering...

"We look for bright people who get things done.  Having Linux experience in which you actually develop for an embedded Linux device is ideal, but rare at most universities at the undergraduate level.  What we try to avoid are folks who have only developed on Linux but never for Linux.  The distinction is one in which you may use Linux as a desktop to learn some programming language, but you are not really focused as much on the kernel and userspace.  Linux for the former is more of a means to an end rather than a target environment."
