Hi
I did discover in the last days Kuliax 7.0RC2 and come again with
enthusiasm as user :) .
As I see after a few days of use: all works perfectly on my laptop
Acer emachines with AMD64
(as it was also with Kuliax 6.0 on my older PC).
I am happy to find the old KDE again and I did add JWM to it.
Why?
Because I work often in graphical or cartography applications and did
a maximal size to working windows.
JWM can be set with only a dynamic tray bar (dynamic = new icons
appear for each opened application) automatic hidden and always on top
over the actual windows if you touch left. It is very practical and
need no room on the desktop.
And for the same reason, I did install Seamonkey 2 because all bars
can be hidden or reappear with only one click each bar, and you have
all the room in the window for drawing, manage you routes in the map
or in the satellite view.
In my opinion, Firefox begins to be a real conservative browser
without new imagination...
Seamonkey is now about the same but with better performances as IRC
client, email client and HTML wysyg editor (but produces blowed and
uggly HTML code, so I don't use it for this purpose and continue to
better use a traditional editor)
I did add Skype.
Deception:
Skype recognize the right integrated camera of the laptop but can' t
show the view.
Deception:
Diverse old friends from Kuliax 6.0 did not appear and need to be
installed separately. No problem but it was probably interesting to
discover them directly in the distribution with adapted links or
commodities for people without experience (gprolog, smalltalk, kturtle
or an other logo, nasm, and, today, I would add the valac package with
genie). If to great consumption of memory in the ISO, I would think
about smaller equipment:
- JWM allow to economize a lot of room as it needs only 200 kB
- Abiword + Gnumeric are now about as performant as OO but a lot
smaller and OO is really easy to install with synaptic...
Depending of the installed libraries, Midori is now a very nice small
browser with good performances and small.
etc...
I find very important to dispose of ISO with max. 700 MB... Why I can
write DVDs of course but I never have blank DVDs at home and I am
certain that a lot of people are in my situation because of the kind
of commercialisation of CDs compared with DVDs...
And it would be really easy to add a ready to use script for an
automatic network installation of more if needed (Debris Linux uses
this way to propose a mini installation from Ubuntu 8.04 with an ISO
with only 180 MB and at the end of the installation finish the
installation with a web installation for languages packages and some
goodies as synaptic not being really necessary but appreciated by a
lot of users if available).
And I did miss the announcement of Kuliax 7.0 in the weekly news at
distrowatch.com.
Tank you for the new release of Kuliax!
Bye

For users interesting to experiment with JWM, an easy way

a) install all your stuff (because of the menu file to get it complete
bevor you start the JWM installation)
b) install jwm grun zim with synaptic or apt-get as you want
c) add a text file in your ~HOME/ directory named .jwmrc-tray with
following content:

<JWM>
<Tray autohide="true" insert="down" valign="center" halign="left"
border="0" width="24" layout="vertical">
<TrayButton popup="seamonkey" icon="default.png">exec:/usr/lib/
seamonkey/seamonkey</TrayButton>
<TrayButton popup="zim" icon="knotes.png">exec:zim</TrayButton>
<TrayButton popup="konqueror" icon="konqueror.png">exec:konqueror</
TrayButton>
<TrayButton popup="Console" icon="go.png">exec:grun</TrayButton>
<TrayButton popup="Console" icon="konsole.png">exec:x-terminal-
emulator</TrayButton>
<TrayButton popup="Mixer" icon="kmix.png">exec:kmix</TrayButton>
<TrayButton popup="Oclock" icon="alarm-clock.png">exec:oclock</
TrayButton>
<TaskList/>
<Dock/>
</Tray>
</JWM>

d) install seamonkey (only option) or adapt the 3thd line above
in .jwmrc-tray for iceape!

(if seamonkey from http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/ is
downloaded in /usr/lib and installed using following chain of commands
in x-terminal:
> su
> konqueror [and open the above download site http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/ to download seamonkey in /usr/lib as root]
> [exit konqueror if it is done and restart x-terminal as root if it disappears]
> cd /usr/lib
> tar -xvjf *bz2
> exit
> [you can now add a link in the KDE feed bar klicking right and following the instructions. To link is /usr/lib/seamonkey/seamonkey; you find icons in /usr/lib/seamonkey/chrome if you want a pretty icon in your bar])

e) add to your ~HOME/ the complete hidden directory named /root/.jwm
that you will find in following iso:

http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/ttuuxxx/other/turbopup_xtreme_v1.iso
username:puppy
password:linux
md5sum 48d59d71310526b4468b63d21ba83651

[see discussion if interessting for you:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=40477&start=435 ]

f) adapt a individual setting file for JWM adding a text file in your
~HOME/ directory named .jwmrc with following content:

> [in x-terminal from your ~HOME/ directory:]
> cp /etc/jwm/jwmrc .jwmrc
> kwrite .jwmrc
> [search the line with the text: " </RootMenu>
> erase all the rest of the file following this point and add following text in exchange and save the changed file
> exit the session
> change session and choice "jwm"
> enter the new session, your first jwm session, using your password as usual
> at the next full computer restart, the uggly X grey background will be changed into the pretty wave light/dark blue background offered by Kuliax
> enjoy JWM with dynamic task bars for your graphic applications]

Remark:

you can also hidde the tool bar of kde 3.5 with the same effect... but
jwm installed like above can work completely without the heavy kde and
needs about only 200 kB ! my kuliax installation empty as given by the
iso in a 5 GB ext2 partition did need ab. 2 GB. the day before I did
install kuliax 7.0 I did make the same directly with Debian Lenny
network installation only X and JWM. it did need exactly 899 MB
installed also as ext2 and starting well but using a /etc/apt/
apt.conf.d/00configperso with following content:

APT::Get::Show-Upgraded "true";
APT::Get::Show-Versions "true";
APT::Get::Purge "true";
APT::Get::List-Cleanup "true";
APT::Cache-Limit 141943904;
APT::Install-Recommends "false";
APT::Install-Suggests "false";
APT::Default-Release “testing”;

it is probably not possible to make a lighter debian installation with
X starting really well without disturb.

the difference is the room you have to give good stuff in a distro...
