Recap of Last Meeting

Last meeting were individual committee meetings. If you've missed out do not worry it is never too late to join a committee! Here is a summary of what each committee did:

  • Environmental Preservation (Sara, Lauren)

    • No updates at this time


  • Resource Conservation (Celeste, Mitch, Nick)

    • Plastic Bottle Reduction Campaign
      • Have a copy of the Coca-Cola contract for KU. Need to examine it and see who the contacts are for each party and read fine print.

    • LED Street Lights
      • The LED lights are installed on west campus
      • We have survey made and in process of being approved by StudentVoice
      • Need to purchase an outdoor survey box to hold paper versions of survey
      • Need to advertise the LED light survey to students, staff, faculty and general public


  • Educational Creative Outreach [ECO] (Monica, Trevor, Mahleea)

    • Facebook
      • Assigned task of uploading and organizing about 2,000 Environs photos to Facebook

    • YouTube
      • Assigned task of uploading Environs HD videos to YouTub

    • Camping Trip
      • Decided on potential days for Environs camping trip. Likely May 6th or 7th.


  • Local Food (Kim, Nolan)

    • Signed up for surveying at the residence halls on May 4th. We will survey the students about local food on campus at Mrs. E's, Oliver and GSP/Corbin from 5-7 p.m.
    • Brainstormed films to show at the ECM before the end of the semester. This could just be for Local Food or Environs.
    • Talked about tabling at the JCCC event and film, "The Greenhorns," this coming Wednesday night (after Environs).
    • Discussed a get-together for Local Food at Sylas & Maddy's or maybe a farm/garden tour of a local farmer ... for fun :).
    • Started designing/planning a compost bin out at the student farm.

  2. Take Charge Challenge

    • Help Lawrence/KU compete in the Take Charge Challenge! Save energy, save money, and beat Manhattan/K-State!

      Lawrence and Manhattan are going head-to-head in the Take Charge Challenge this year, and the town that reduces its energy use the most will win an energy efficiency or renewable energy community project worth up to $100,000!

      As a student, YOU can help Lawrence/KU win:

      • Make and report your switch to compact fluorescent bulbs.
      • Enroll in Westar's energy efficiency programs like WattSaver to get a FREE, professionally installed programmable thermostat!
      • Attend a Take Charge! Challenge event or create an event by presenting the Take Charge Challenge Presentation to your student group or class.

  1. KU Student Raingarden Workday

    • Join us at the KU Student Raingarden for an afternoon in the sunshine. We'll be cutting back old growth and pulling weeds to make room for the garden to thrive again this summer. Stop by any time to learn how you can keep this KU student initiative growing!
      • When: Friday, April 29th, 2pm - 5pm
      • Where: KU Raingarden (adjacent to the Student Rec Center

  1. Potter Lake 100th Year Anniversary Celebration

    • Help KU celebrate the centennial of Potter Lake! KU Spring Football game begins at 1pm; afterward come by the Dance Pavilion for food and music for a day on the lawn of Potter Lake. Information about the rich history of the lake will be available, as well as a description of the improvements made within the past few years and the future hopes for the lake. Local band "stone and feather" will be providing music for the event! The two outgoing architecture gents will be playing for the afternoon before and after a few short speeches. Our own Chancellor Gray-Little will be there, and so should you! Bring your friends and family, a lawn chair, outdoor recreational equipment and enjoy the afternoon following the KU Spring Football game!
