Recap of Last Meeting

Last meeting were individual committee meetings. If you've missed out do not worry it is never too late to join a committee! Here is a summary of what each committee did:
  • Environmental Preservation (Sara, Lauren)

    • Haskell Wetlands Eco-Walk
      • Work days to physically help build the Eco-Walk that we raised over $1000 for last semester!

    • KU Field Station
      • Vaughn coming to committee meeting March 9th to talk about possible projects

    • Film Showing
      • Potential documentary screening (strategically planned so as not to compete with King Corn)
      • Scheduled a watch party on Friday, March 11 at 3:30PM
      • Choosing between Crude, Manufactured Landscapes, and No Impact Man


  • Resource Conservation (Celeste, Mitch, Nick)

    • Cycling Awareness/Safety
      • Create advertising for event (Buses, KJHK, UDK, SUA, Facebook, flyers, and chalking)
      • Look into University policy on having vendors show their products on campus.
      • Get room reservations and fill out UEC (University Events Committee) forms.
      • Formed a partnership with KU Cycling Club and the KU Public Safety Office
      • See about partnership for event with City of Lawrence, KU Center for Sustainability and the Lawrence Bike Club.
      • Create list of bike or bike supply companies and contact them.
      • Pick up new City of Lawrence bike maps.

    • LED Street Lights
      • Demo being setup for west campus for potential creation of new KU outdoor lighting standard. Will be meeting with Design Construction & Management over the next few weeks..


  • Educational Creative Outreach [ECO] (Monica, Trevor, Mahleea)

    • Bus Advertisements
      • Must now be copied, laminated, and posted around campus and in the buses. Should be up by end of next week.

    • Earth Day Parade Float
      • Local Food theme. Make food out of recycled materials, dress up as farmers with tools, scarecrow, and advertise KU Student Farm.
      • Decided to go with a smaller trailer this year pulled by bikers to see how it goes.
      • Hand out seed packets.

    • Camping Trip
      • The weather is starting to change and it would be nice to organize a camping trip possibly at the end of April?

    • KU Student Farm Co-op Plot
      • $5/each to start plot, bring to next meeting to get our spot reserved.


  • Local Food (Kim, Nolan)

    • King Corn Film Showing
      • Donating 70% of the proceeds from King Corn to Just Food (30% is going to Films For Action for cosponsoring the event, promoting the event and creating awesome fliers). Chipotle's 500 free burrito cards will be door prizes.
      • Contacting businesses for donations for the door prizes/raffle.
      • Getting ready to post fliers around town to promote it.

    • Surveys
      • In process of getting questions approved by Student Success for loading onto iTouchs
      • Need to schedule a date to table before Spring Break.


Announcements
  1. Student Environmental Advisory Board (SEAB)

    • SEAB acts on behalf of Student Senate to allocate funding to environmental projects through the student sustainability fee. They are currently looking for projects to fund. If you have a project that you would like funded please look over the application for the requirements and submit it as soon as possible. Visit the SEAB site for more information and to download the application form.

  2. KU Student Farm

    • First meeting: Tuesday, March 8th, at 7pm in the lobby of the Kansas Union (greenhouse work begins mid-March)
    • How to apply for a plot: Click on the student farm logo on the blog to view the application. Print, fill out and bring it to the first meeting.

  3. Take Charge Challenge

    • Help Lawrence/KU compete in the Take Charge Challenge! Save energy, save money, and beat Manhattan/K-State!

      Lawrence and Manhattan are going head-to-head in the Take Charge Challenge this year, and the town that reduces its energy use the most will win an energy efficiency or renewable energy community project worth up to $100,000!

      As a student, YOU can help Lawrence/KU win:

      • Make and report your switch to compact fluorescent bulbs.
      • Enroll in Westar's energy efficiency programs like WattSaver to get a FREE, professionally installed programmable thermostat!
      • Attend a Take Charge! Challenge event or create an event by presenting the Take Charge Challenge Presentation to your student group or class.

  1. King Corn: You Are What You Eat

    • KU Environs and Films For Action are partnering to show King Corn, a documentary that exposes the industrialization of corn and its effect on farmers, our environment, health and economy. Simran Sethi, a KU journalism professor, will speak before the movie, and Curt Ellis, one of the filmmakers, will join us for a short Skype Q&A afterward. Doors open at 6:30pm, and Simran will start us off at 7pm.

  2. Net Impact Speaker: The American Electric Car Market

    • Mr. Paul Wilbur, President and CEO of Aptera Motors, will be here to discuss the future of the American electric car market, and how Aptera fills a niche within it. Please join Net Impact and the KU Energy Club in welcoming Mr. Wilbur to KU, and come learn about electric cars! Additionally, there will be a small roundtable lunch session for people who would like more Q&A time. If you are interested in attending the lunch Q&A, please contact Chris Billinger at cb...@ku.edu.
