Recap of Last Meeting

Last meeting were individual committee meetings. If you've missed out do not worry it is never too late to join a committee! Here is a summary of what each committee did:

  • Environmental Preservation (Sara, Lauren)

    • KU Field Station
      • Removed many invasive trees on Saturday and are planning other work days. See Photo

    • Film Showing: No Impact Man
      • Working on promotion and discussion material for afterward

  • Resource Conservation (Celeste, Mitch, Nick)

    • Cycling Week
      • Contacted Sunflower Outdoor & Bike to schedule time for them to come down to do bike assessments on Earth Week.
      • Setting up meeting with KU Public Safety office on helping out with big bike ride.
      • Creating advertising for event to be sent to departments, and to be put on buses.

    • LED Street Lights
      • Will be meeting with Design Construction & Management this Wednesday
      • Demo lights have been ordered and should be installed at the bio-swell on West Campus in April.
      • Creating a text message polling system for public to give their opinion about each fixture model.
      • Advertising the demonstration for students, staff, faculty, and general public to vote on.


  • Educational Creative Outreach [ECO] (Monica, Trevor, Mahleea)

    • Earth Day Parade Float
      • Here is a short list of materials we decided on so far:
        • 2 liter bottles
        • Newspaper
        • coffee filters
        • rubber bands, string, twine, wire
        • plastic water bottles
        • dyeing materials (water colors, beet juice?)
        • cardboard

    • Camping Trip
      • We tentatively decided on Saturday, April 30th
      • time and place still to be discussed
      • see about renting canoes/kayaks from KU rec


  • Local Food (Kim, Nolan)

    • King Corn Film Showing
      • Discussed how the King Corn showing went, possible improvements for next time
      • Drew winners for the King Corn drawing
      • Called the winners to let them know what they won
      • Signed thank you cards for businesses/organizations that donated for the drawing

  1. Collect materials for Earth Day Parade Float

    • Help Environs build the Earth Day parade float! Check out the committee update for ECO to see list of materials needed.

  2. KU Student Farm Applications Now Being Accepted

    • How to apply for a plot: Click on the student farm logo on the blog to view the application. Print, fill out and bring it to the first meeting.
  3. Take Charge Challenge

    • Help Lawrence/KU compete in the Take Charge Challenge! Save energy, save money, and beat Manhattan/K-State!

      Lawrence and Manhattan are going head-to-head in the Take Charge Challenge this year, and the town that reduces its energy use the most will win an energy efficiency or renewable energy community project worth up to $100,000!

      As a student, YOU can help Lawrence/KU win:

      • Make and report your switch to compact fluorescent bulbs.
      • Enroll in Westar's energy efficiency programs like WattSaver to get a FREE, professionally installed programmable thermostat!
      • Attend a Take Charge! Challenge event or create an event by presenting the Take Charge Challenge Presentation to your student group or class.

  1. KU Energey Conference

    • The conference's mission is to increase awareness of the challenges facing the energy sector by bringing students together with key players in industry, academia and government. The conference will include a research symposium, two keynote speakers, and three panel discussions by experts.
