Recap of Last Meeting

Last meeting we heard from both political parties at the KU campus running for Student Senate. They presented their platforms and had a short debate on their opposition's platforms. We then worked with the Center for Sustainability in assisting the Student Life working group for the KU Campus Sustainability Plan in forming ways to promote student involvement.

Announcements

  1. Renew KU Endorsement

    • Environs has officially endorsed Renew KU. This decision was made from their excellent presentation at the last meeting regarding sustainability on campus. They not only met with Jeff Severin the Director of Sustainability at KU, but argued their points very well. Renew KU will help increase funding for the Student Environmental Advisory Board (SEAB) and the Revolving Green Fund, as well as collaborate with the Center for Sustainability in creating a more sustainable campus. Please vote this Wednesday and Thursday, your vote can mean the difference between a more sustainable KU.

  2. Environs T-Shirts

    • Environs t-shirts have arrived! We have two styles in various sizes. They are $10 each so get them while they are in stock! Please see attached image for a picture. We would love it if everyone would wear their shirts to the Earth Day Parade this Saturday.

  3. Take Charge Challenge

    • Help Lawrence/KU compete in the Take Charge Challenge! Save energy, save money, and beat Manhattan/K-State!

Lawrence and Manhattan are going head-to-head in the Take Charge Challenge this year, and the town that reduces its energy use the most will win an energy efficiency or renewable energy community project worth up to $100,000!

As a student, YOU can help Lawrence/KU win:

      • Make and report your switch to compact fluorescent bulbs.
      • Enroll in Westar's energy efficiency programs like WattSaver to get a FREE, professionally installed programmable thermostat!
      • Attend a Take Charge! Challenge event or create an event by presenting the Take Charge Challenge Presentation to your student group or class.

Events
  1. Earth Day Float Craft Party

    • We had a pretty successful craft night on Sunday, but still have much work to do before the earth day parade THIS SATURDAY. We will be having two more craft nights before then and would really appreciate any help we can get, so even if you have friends that aren't in Environs, invite them to craft with us!

      • Craft nights at my house (1105 New Jersey St.) on Thursday @ 5:30 and Friday @ 6:30.  The craft night on Friday is going to be more like a craft "party" with snacks and music, and bring some beers if you want to (we can get a little crafty crazy).

      • Also. we will have the trailer so everyone can really visualize the float.  The theme is the Student Farm, so start thinking of your best farm themed outfits, you know, like your favorite pair of overalls, or a sunflower, or a chicken or sheep!?

      • Bring any tools or materials you think we may need, but if you don't have any, don't worry we will have things for you to do. List of materials we need
        • scissors
        • newspaper
        • staple gun (Mahleea?)
        • balloons (preferably oblong animal ones for paper mache squashes)
        • green plastic bottle
        • aluminum cans
        • coffee filters (preferable used)
        • rubber bands
        • anything else you can think of!

Thanks everyone, hope to see you crafting and having a good time. This is a good opportunity to get to know Environs members outside of just meetings and such, so don't be shy!
