I've just upgraded the wife's computer to Kubuntu 11.10 and when I try to use Firefox with her log in, the background is black. This seems to affect all gtk apps.
Anyone got any ideas?

Did you try to switch off the video effects? I got this issue with nvidia card and had to struggle with the drivers.

Thanks to http://fillumina.wordpress.com/2012/01/26/kde-4-8-on-ubuntu-11-10/, I figured out that all I needed to do was:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall gtk2-engines-oxygen
