Hi List,

I wondered if anyone had sucessfully installed virtualbox in beta12, and if so
how to go about it.

Any help appreciated

Just install it from the Ubuntu repository - that should work. If it
doesn't work for you, please provide some detail of the problems you
see.

I tried the general install for any linux system which didn't run, as there
seemed no repository for 'precise' which I thought was the kubuntu 12

From the virtual box website:

Debian-based Linux distributions

Note: VirtualBox has been moved from non-free to contrib with 4.0, so please
adjust your repository settings.

Add one of the following lines according to your distribution to your
/etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian oneiric contrib
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian natty contrib
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian maverick contrib non-free
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian lucid contrib non-free
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian karmic contrib non-free
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian hardy contrib non-free
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian squeeze contrib non-free
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian lenny contrib non-free

I tried substituting precise, but to no avail.

You are correct, Virtualbox don't yet provide a repo for Precise 12.04, you
may want to try installing the version available in the normal Ubuntu repos,
which at the moment seem to be the latest version.

You can try downloading the Oneiric package as listed in VBox's download page
and try installing that. Also installing the package 'dkms' may help as it
will try to automatically recompile the required kernel modules when your
kernel is updated (extremely often in 12.04 as it is still in heavy
development).

Using the Virtualbox from the official Ubuntu repos may save you some effort in
this, assuming that any development kernel updates don't temporarily break it.

I see, you tried the version from the virtualbox website. I suppose they
won't provide a precise version before the release of 12.04. I used the
version for precise coming from the Ubuntu repositories and that one
worked for me. But if you really need the version from the virtualbox
website, you could try the version for oneiric instead of the (not yet
available) version for precise.
