Kubernetes autoscale with custom metric

Hi 

I have the requirement to autoscale kubernetes with custom metric.

 metric server is prometheus.

Can anyone please provide some hint, what does it mean custom metric? Do I need to write some adapter to fetch metric information from metric server. Can I write using java.

Please provide some valuable link or hint how to write custom adapter.
