Path to CSI Migration GA Discussion

Hello!

As you might have noticed, CSI Migration has been beta since Kubernetes 1.17

This feature is a very significant effort that we want to move forward. It helps us to fully take advantage of the advanced features in CSI, which also help us to reduce the burden of managing in-tree code. 

Our original plan for the CSI Migration GA && in-tree code removal was K8s 1.21 ;) However, this is most likely to slip. Planning for 1.21 is still in progress. And it is time for us to meet and have a discussion on the plan moving forward.

I have already started a meeting doc for the topics we will cover, please feel free to take a look and comment if anything interests you.

I have created this doodle for this Friday and next week, please do fill in your available time if you are interested. We do recommend attending the meeting if you are the maintainer for the in-tree driver/cloud-provider. I will also send out a summary after the meeting in case you cannot make it.

[ACTION REQUIRED] Thanks for coming to today's meeting. Here is the summary:

1. CSI migration timeline
• 1.21/1.22 release: CSIMigration{cloud-provider} turn on by default
• 1.22 release: CSIMigration GA announcement
• 1.23/1.24 release: In-tree code removal
2. Exit criteria for CSI migration Beta:
• All known serious bugs are addressed
• Upgrade/Downgrade/Skew tests running in CI, this can be either OSS or Internal tests managed by each driver
• Figure out driver installation storage
• Might need to talk to sig/cloud-provider-{xx} to see if need to bundle the installation together
3. Remaining Core CSI Migration GA work
• Migrated operation metrics: https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/98279 need to come up with a design
• CSI topology rollback bug in csi-translation-lib: PR under review
• Update PV kubernetes topology label to GA: https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/98281
• Replace CSIMigration{X}Complete flag with InTreePlugin{X}Unregister: PR under review
• Windows testing for CSI migration: each cloud-provider need to figure out by themselves.
• CSI dangling attach: https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/80488 need more design and not a GA blocker
• ./hack/local-up-cluster.sh and kube-up script update or abandon it: still need to sync with sig/cloud-provider
4. [ACTION REQUIRED] Action Items for each in-tree driver maintainer
• Decide if they want to turn on CSIMigration{cloud-provider} in 1.21 release, this might include following changes if they do:
• test-infra change to install driver by default
• default feature gate setting
• Make a plan for the 1.24 in-tree code removal
• Plan might include: when to turn it on by default, when to go GA, how to install the driver?(By bundle with cloud-provider or other ways)
