  • Enhancement name: API Server Tracing
  • Enhancement status (alpha/beta/stable): alpha
  • SIG: Instrumentation, API Machinery  T
  • k/enhancements repo issue #: kubernetes/enhancements#647
  • PR #’s: kubernetes/kubernetes#103601kubernetes/kubernetes#103234
  • Additional time needed (in days): 3
  • Reason this enhancement is critical for this milestone: Tracing is a useful tool for debugging slow requests.
  • Risks from adding code late: (to k8s stability, testing, etc.) Low.  Code is feature-gated, and only enabled in the alpha suite of tests.
  • Risks from cutting enhancement: (partial implementation, critical customer usecase, etc.): One of the PRs above is the e2e test for the feature.  Cutting it would risk releasing functionality without proper testing.  The other PR adds telemetry to admission webhook requests.  Debugging slow webhook requests is one of the core use-cases of tracing.  Both PRs are passing tests, and reviewers have taken at least one pass, but need approval.

+1 for me, tracing without having webhooks instrumented takes away a ton of the value. And David has demonstrably shown it works.
