This is a request to split an existing KEP into two.

Enhancement name: Reject Invalid PVC DataSource
Enhancement status (alpha/beta/stable): stable
SIG: storage
k/enhancements repo issue #: 2546
PR #’s: 2552
Additional time needed (in days): 0 days

Reason this enhancement is critical for this milestone:
We would like to solve both issues at the time the Volume Populators
feature moves to beta. Technically the two KEPs could be implemented at
separate times but because they both touch the DataSource field of the
PVC it makes sense to implement them at the same time.

Risks from adding code late:
The proposed change breaks backwards compatibility in a very unlikely
situation in order to correct a bad decision. If it turns out that this
cure is worse than the disease, we will have to back out the change.

Risks from cutting enhancement: Anything that results in one KEP being
implemented without the other will result in a series of behavior
changes with the DataSource field of the PVC that's harder to explain
and harder to document. We would prefer to merge them together but to
consider them separately and to have two release notes to clearly
explain both changes.

Hi Ben,

After the discussion with SIG Storage chairs
(https://kubernetes.slack.com/archives/C09QZFCE5/p1615483982022000),
we found that the enhancement has been retargeted for v1.22. In light
of that fact, we don't think the exception request is necessary
anymore.

Thank you for filing the exception request ahead in time!

Best,
Nabarun Pal // Kubernetes 1.21 Release Lead
