• Reason this enhancement is critical for this milestone:

• The base DRA is going GA in 1.34, but without this enhancement, adoption will be slowed significantly.

• Risks from adding code late: (to k8s stability, testing, etc.)

• This is a feature gated alpha feature with no default enablement. Therefore, risk is low adding this late.

• The PR has been under review for quite a while with a very responsive author and active, responsive reviewers for API, SIG Node, SIG Scheduling, and DRA. A bit more time is needed to wrap up existing review comments. 

• Risks from cutting enhancement: (partial implementation, critical customer usecase, etc.)

• This enhancement allows existing manifests that use device plugins to continue to work with clusters that deploy only DRA drivers for those devices. Widespread adoption of DRA will be difficult for users and for downstream distributions if existing manifests don’t work with DRA-based nodes, so delaying this for another release will significantly slow down adoption of DRA and enablement of critical AI/ML use cases.
