Hey there all,

TL;DR:

- The Kubernetes project is participating in a GitHub Beta where you can give kudos or shoutout another member[1].

- Enabled for k/community[2], k/kubernetes[3], k/test-infra[4], and k/website[5].

- Give a shoutout to someone by using: /shoutout @foobar for <x>

  - NOTE: The person will not receive a notification for the shoutout.

- Shoutouts will appear in the issue timeline and user hovercard, with more planned in the future (examples[6]).

- If you encounter them being abused, please notify a GitHub Admin immediately through #github-management[7] slack or git...@kubernetes.io address.

- Test it here[6]

- Post feedback here[8]

GitHub approached the Kubernetes project about testing a new way in which community members can recognize, give kudos, shoutout or give appreciation for other contributors' work. As we have a #shoutouts[9] slack channel, and are always looking to provide additional methods of recognition, this seemed like a great thing to explore :D

We have decided to participate in the beta and enable it for 4 repos to start:

- kubernetes/community[2]

- kubernetes/kubernetes[3]

- kubernetes/test-infra[4]

- kubernetes/website[5]

You can give someone a shoutout by using the command:

/shoutout @foobar for x

Example:

/shoutout @herpderp for an awesome PR review

NOTE: At this time, shoutouts do not trigger a GitHub notification. This may change in the future, but in the meantime if you want to notify the person, you must at-mention them on a separate line.

Contributors These will appear in the issue/PR timeline, and the user's hovercard with the long term goal of surfacing them at the repo/org level in addition to a person's own profile when more moderation and features can be rolled out.

If you'd like to see how these shoutouts look, we have configured a test issue[6] that can be used to preview or test the feature before using it elsewhere in the project.

The last thing we'd like to see is shoutouts being abused :( Anyone with write permissions on a repo can remove a shoutout, but in the meantime please report any instances to the GitHub Admin either via the  #github-management[7] slack or email the git...@kubernetes.io address.

If you have any thoughts, questions, or concerns - please raise them in feedback issue[8] or if you'd prefer not to raise it publicly, reach out to one of the GitHub Admins[10].

With that, happy shoutout'ing!

- Bob, on behalf of SIG ContribEx and the GitHub Admins
