Hi everybody!

I'm Yannis, lead of the Kubeflow Manifests WG. I know that many of you have been wondering about Istio in Kubeflow 1.3. I'm happy to announce that from the Kubeflow Manifests WG side, we will include the latest, Istio 1.9.0 in Kubeflow 1.3 manifests' common services.

I have now successfully validated the 1.9.0 version in a Kubeflow installation and I'm also engaging on all the necessary PRs which are currently in flight to enable this:

You can track the following issue for progress:

Thanks,
Yannis

Hi Yannis,

It's awesome that Istio 1.9.0 will be compatible! Will any Istio 1.6+ version be compatible with the 1.3 release as was our original goal?

We had also talked about unbundling Istio. It would be great for the 1.3 release to include a kfdef config file that does not include Istio and will work with any Istio 1.6+ (all the way through 1.9.0) installed. Today we ask folks to remove the Istio entries from the kfdef config which may add some unnecessary friction.

Personally I'd take the approach of telling folks that they must have Istio 1.6+ installed to install Kubeflow, but for convenience we provide this configuration which includes Istio 1.9.0.

Thanks!
Bernd

Hey Yannis, this is great news thanks! I suppose this only relates to common services right? AuthN via Cognito for example is something that is critical for our AWS use cases and has in the past blocked us from upgrading the Istio version to 1.3.1, even though common Kubeflow services already supported it.
