During last week's community call, a proposal was raised to adopt Calendar Versioning (CalVer) as the release versioning scheme for the Kubeflow manifests repository "Kubeflow AI Reference Platform".

The topic was also discussed in the release meeting, and we would now like to gather broader community feedback on moving to CalVer starting with the 2026 releases.

Motivation

Each platform release represents a snapshot in time of all Kubeflow projects (Trainer, Pipelines, KServe, Dashboard and other components). These projects evolve independently and may introduce breaking changes between releases, so CalVer provides a versioning method that accurately reflects this model.

CalVer helps users stay informed through:
  • The Kubeflow project compatibility table
  • The Kubeflow platform release notes
Because the Kubeflow AI Reference Platform integrates multiple upstream components on varying development cycles, CalVer offers clearer expectations around release timing and component alignment.

You can follow discussions in slack here.

Thanks.
