Is anyone using Vianet as their internet provider?  If so - how would you rate them?  I am considering switching from WorldLink (which has been incredibly slow recently) to Vianet, but would like to hear of others' experience first.  Thanks.

Tintin, I used to publish a rating yearly in the local paper but stopped after I finally found a winning combo (broadlink fiber + world link cable as a backup). Depending on where you live in the valley, any over-the-air connection is going to be intermittent, and a lot slower than rated. Been hacking at this for a decade now in several locations in Lalitpur, and these two solutions are best (broadlink fiber performs at 1-3 Mbps to the USA while Worldlink cable performs at  7-10 Mbps / both are rated at 10 Mbps). Cost is roughly 60USD per month for Broadlink fiber and 21USD per month for Worldlink cable. I have no comment on Vianet except to say that they mean well.

Oh Gosh!

These ISP's, all, they suck. I am using Vianet and as I have paid a 7 month advance, neither can I drop the service nor I can use the net. The net is not only slow but service as well is pathetic. Make switch wisely :D.

Hi - about Vianet, I can say that I was pleased with the speed and reliability of their "fibrenet" service from Oct 2012 to June 2013 (when I went back to the US). A lot can change in a year and a half, though, and I haven't heard how they are lately. When I return to Nepal, I'll probably sign up with them again and see how it goes.

Your experience might depend on where in KTM or Patan you're located - if their existing lines are close to you, for example. I was in Bakhundole, in a ground-floor flat across from Greenwich Hotel. They ran a connection to my flat from a larger connection box in a nearby intersection. Loadshedding didn't cause outages, but of course you'd still need a backup power source for your router.

No complaints from me - one person household; streaming movies, video calling, downloads, uploads, email, web. The usual things. Your mileage may vary.

I have been a Vianet customer for almost 2 years(since March of 2013) and my only "complaint" is the higher than average cost. The actual data transfer speeds have been slightly above the advertised plan speeds every time I check. Yes, every time. We have had to deal with occasional outages, but they usually SMS in advance to let us know about a planned outage and how long it will last. After having less than favorable experiences with two other ISPs, I am now happy to recommend Vianet to friends. (We live the in Sainbhu area)

Hi, I switched from Subisu to Vianet in May. Vianet had to put in a new line into the neighbourhood where i am in Baluwatar and it took them so many weeks that i had to renew my Subisu connection for an extra month. However, now that it has been finally installed, the connection has been good for my small office and home. But, i don't think that the connection would be that good for streaming movies.

I've tried pretty much every ISP in Nepal and they will eventually fail you at some point. What you need is a good technical guy to constantly check up on them and a good outreach guy at the ISP that will respond asap and will check on your connection regularly. Vianet is actually one of the few ISPs that have a good response network so go for it.
