Due to popular demand, the Himalayan Rush Triathlon happening on 25th February will have a biathlon (cycle/run) event. Lake swimming in February is not for everybody it seems, but now you can join this fabulous event without getting wet. No bikini or trunks required!

The biathletes will start the race as the last swimmer crawls onto land like a determined prehistoric fish. Fresh legged and warm, the biathletes then proceed to tear past the wet haired triathletes. This is approach is unique to Nepal and the Himalayan Rush and you can be part of it.

Here is a quick FAQ which explains everything. Any other queries, hit reply!

What is a Biathlon?
It's any sporting event made up of two disciplines. Since Nepal has some of the best trails in the world for trail-running and mountain-biking, we are mixing the two and have a trail-biathlon. This will be going on simultaneously with the 'Himlayan Rush' Triathlon as we happen to also have an amazing warm lake to swim in.

What comes first, Bike or Run?
The biking comes before the running. Each of these routes are challenging on their own, with climbs and dirt-trails. Keeping safety in mind there are very few technically challenging bits.

Why is it challenging to Bike and then Run?
Running on tired, wobbly legs is challenging on it's own. Besides that, decrease in running economy and breathing discomfort at the onset of the run are also significant factors. For more information please have a look at http://www.brianmac.co.uk/triathlon/breath.htm and http://www.active.com/triathlon/Articles/Transition-Tips-for-a-Speedy-Bike-to-Run.htm

How it will work and how it blends in with the triathlon
?
The pack of biathletes will leave with the last triathlete out of the water (whichever distance it is that they're going for) and will bike/run the same course as the tri. They will be timed independently.

Distances?
Sprint distance - 20 Km cycling + 5 Km run
Standard distance - 40 Km cycling + 10 Km run

When and where does it take place?

All registration needs to be done online or on the phone by the 20th of February 2012. This is in order for us to manage all the logistics.

How can I get a bike to race on?

The cost covers transport of the bike to and from Kathmandu plus support (4 bike mechanics from Kathmandu). If there are a substantial number of people staying in Pokhara (30min / 12km away), we will organise a bus for transport. Bookings can be made online for Begnas Lake Resort. Guest house rooms cost ~ Rs. 1200 for a double. We can book a limited number of rooms for you.
