Hello,
I recently moved back to Nepal for good and I have my dog back in the
US. I looked through couple of pet relocating agents in the US and
their service fee is ridiculous. Any advice on how to move your pet
here ?

I'm considering cargo upto Delhi and then picking it up Delhi and
bringing it here but the NOC and all the custom paperwork seems like
another long story. Any preferred routes and airlines ??

Any info/past experience greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First of all you need a health certificate with vaccination record from the appropriate government department back in the USA.

The Nepali Agency that regulates the import of a dog is the Quarantine Office. You are required to inform at the Airport in Kathmandu seven hours prior to arrival so that officials from quarantine office will be able to manage their time to be at the airport.

However, since the airport can hardly be reached by phone it will be better to contact Quarantine by phone.

You need to fill out the Import Certificate and hand that over to the officers.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

I brought two dogs and a cat here last summer using Qatar Airways.I
have heard other people use Thai Air via BKK with good results. I had
also looked at relocation services and ruled them out for cost. The
cheapest way is to have the animals travel as extra baggage on same
flight as you - so if you are planning a trip to the US anytime, this
would be an ideal time to do it. Dogs under 70lbs can go as extra
baggage and the cost from Washington DC to KTM last July was $175. The
other option is cargo which is more expensive. I found Qatar airways
to be very good - I certainly had concerns given that the animals
woudl be in Doha for 7 hours in middle of summer. I had left a note on
top of one cage asking someone to please give my older dog some pain
medicine - I reassured them he was friendly. There was a note written
back saying they had given the medicine with some food and water and
what a lovely dog he was! Very reassuring. As the previous person
explained, you will need a certificate from your vet in the US. There
is no need to get this certified by Federal vet (USDA) in your region
- Nepal will accept the state certification. Your vet will probably
know all this. For me, there was no hassle entering nepal at all. The
officials hardly looked at the vaccination certificates and other
paperwork. The biggest issue is getting the paperwork in order in the
US as officials and airport staff there are very concerned that
everything is in order but the good news is that the airline can give
you a list of requirements. Vaccinations need to be dated a certain
amount of time before travel so check this - it is not good enought
that your dog's vaccinations are up to date for your vet's liking.
there are rules about exactly how old the vaccinations can be.

I have travelled for past 16 years with my animals to many countries -
if I can give you any more help or advice, do not hesitate to contact
me. Karen
