Hi,

I am not sure if you can get a licence on a tourist visa. But if you have any other type of visa you can get a license in two ways:

1) "Exchange" your home country license. You will get the same classes you had in your home country.
There is no need for an overseas license. And actually it is not a real exchange, because you will keep your old license as well.

2) If you don't have a license already you can get one just like the Nepalis.
You will have to pass both a written and a practical test.

For the practical test there is no official training. You will need to find someone to teach you how to drive a bike and practice the test.
For the written test you will have to study little bit. But the pass rate is quite low, so just common sense will probably get you there as well.
You will have to request the license office to take the test in English instead of Nepali. You could also discuss with one of the brokers outside of the office.
They should be able to have you "pass" the written test for around NRS 4000 - 5000

Good luck!
Dennis

Here is something out of the book I'm writing to help tourists come here and have a better time on less money. The first chapter is free and the rest isn't finished, maybe by spring. If you want a copy of the first chapter just send a note to FrugalTra...@gmail.com.

To Drive or Not to Drive There are many motor scooter and motorcycle rental shops that rent to tourists I kept asking about a license. Do you need one? Is my old one from America good? No one seemed to be very clear about it. I am typing the following directly from the official drivers’ manual.

"For New License

A)    Motorcycle, Scooter, Moped

1.     3 recent passport size photos and 1 auto size photo (2 photos for application form, one for the file and one for the license card)

2.     A certified photocopy of citizenship card

3.     Photocopy of passport if foreigner

4.     One photocopy of blood group card

5.     Fees

a.     Registration fee Rs. 200

b.     Rs. 700 as revenue after passing trial

Time:

1.     Written exam within seven days of registration.

2.     Trial within seven days of passing written exam.

3.     License will be given within 7 days of passing trial.

Note: Presently written exam is taken on the same day or the next day of registration. Trial can take place the next day of written exam and driving license is given on the same day of passing the trial exam."

Here is the real dilemma. It’s fine to drive without a license, but if you kill someone you have to go to prison, mandatory, if you do not have a license. I do understand that having an international license will work here. I would suggest you get the international license before you leave your home country. I strongly advise against driving without a legal license.

Hi Ananda,

Your information is not complete.

It is true if you don't have a valid license in your home country.

If you do have valid license you can "exchange" it for a Nepali license without taking a test or trial.

You will need to get a statement from your embassy saying that you have a valid license and mentioning the classes (A, B etc)
With this you can fill up an application form, pay the fees and you will get a Nepali driving license.

Regards,
Dennis
