Artist Statements

“One should embark on an artwork without having a conception of the eventual end”

Between two Points is collaborative project by Yajyu Manandhar and Michael Gordon examining impermanence, abstraction, and the potential of spontaneity. Born on opposite sides of the world, the two artists have been working side by side as the Kathmandu University Center for Art and Design Artists in Residence. Drawing on the urban landscape as both their inspiration and their medium, Yajyu and Michael transform found materials into offerings of sound and space. They explore the possibilities of minimalist interventions through color, reverberation, and movement. In the ritual of making, the studio becomes a sanctuary, and the works become technologies for recalibrating the mind, external anchors for an internal journey. The two artist ritually orchestrate their time-based experiences with diligent care and effort. Then, like prayers written on a flag, they let the pieces go, scattering the happenings throughout the city to ripple from one person to the next. 
Their works will be on display at MCubed Gallery from April 27 to May 4th.

Artist introduction

Michael Gordon 
Michael Gordon was born and raised Denver, Colorado where he spent his childhood running around the backyard with a roll of duct tape. His work has taken him around the world collaborate with groups ranging from graffiti artist in Bogotá to Tibetan monks in Kathmandu. He received his BA from Dartmouth College and his MFA from California College of the Arts. His pieces have been exhibited in the De Young Museum in San Francisco, AICAD Studios in New York, and Abigail Ogilvy gallery in Boston. He is currently a Fulbright Student Researcher in Nepal examining the socioeconomic, cultural, and artistic landscape of contemporary Buddhist art. He has also been teaching and creating work at the Kathmandu University Center for Art and Design as an Artist in Residence. 

Yajyu Manandhar
Yajyu Manandhar grew up moving from city to city. Shortly as he was born his family moved from Kathmandu to Bara to Rautahat to Nijgadh to Nepalganj to Kalaiya and eventually back to Swayambhu. With each new town, he met a new set of people with a new language, culture, and way of living. Now, he is primarily based in the Kathmandu Valley. He has worked with various groups of people from a marginalized community of Sindhupalchok to the common city people of Basantapur. He recently graduated from Kathmandu University Center for Art and Design, where he is now an Artist in Residence. He has exhibited his work at the Nepal Art Council, LASAANA/Nexus Cafe, and the Taragon Museum.
