Child born in Nepal

Hello group just wanted to ask your experiences about what happens when a child is born in Nepal, dose he/she needs to get a visa to live here? And also do you have to get an exit permit when you leave the country if visa is not an issue?

How expensive and difficult all the process are

I value any advice

Thank you in advance

Hi

Posting to all in case someone else needs the info :)

My baby was born in Nepal a year ago :) so we had to go through this quite recently :)

1) get a certificate from the hospital where the baby was born
2) go to a municipality office to exchange that paper to the Nepali birth certificate. If you don't write Nepali - take somebody with you, the forms are all in Nepali language, not English.
3) Take the birth certificate to Barbar Mahal for translation. There is the only government translators office there that translates to/from English and you need THEM to translate your document into English. It's in a small lane in Barbar Mahal, in the same gate where there is same sort of "attorney office", looks like a row of small windows/kiosks. Prepare English names of you/spouse/baby and the name of the city you are originally from and check the translation for mistakes when they get it done (takes about 3days).
It's not expensive - around 100-200rps. The harder thing is to find the office itself :))  Don't take the translation to a private notariy public- they will charge more, but their translation is not valid in some government institutions - you will be sent back to that barbar mahal place :).
4) Maybe steps 1-3 are enough if your embassy is in Nepal - check with them. In case if not, yo also need to take it to the Ministry of Foreign affairs and ask them to stamp it to verify the document (that it's legal).
5) You need to take it to your embassy (in Nepal or abroad, ours is in Dehli) and they must be able to finish the registration process, issue your baby your country's birth certificate and passport. Or you can ask for a temporarily travelling document from your embassy and just take baby home for registration (we went home :)).

At home we needed to have our Nepali birth certificate verified by the ministry of foreign affairs in our country, translate the English paper into local language, and then we could apply for local documents.

The baby does need a visa from the time it has a passport. It's no rush though - we got ours when the baby was about 4 months old. :). Also, it's sweet that babies need visas, but visa is free of charge until your child is 10yrs old :)

If you need more help/info on documents/birth options here, feel free to get in touch :)

Have a great day

Natasha

and yes, we got an exit permit when we traveled with the baby for the first time, with his temporary documents (though I am not sure it was really needed) - I think it is needed when the baby just got a passport/document from embassy without a visa in it and you want to travel. We did it on the day of departure and it took us a few hours of just waiting at the immigration department and running around with papers :))) If you need to do one, don't forget baby's passport pictures - they are needed for the exit permit.

We just went through the proces too and we can confirm all the steps
mentioned earlier.

To be able to get out of Nepal you indeed need a visa in your travel
document. For us it was easier for us to get a tourist visa instead of
a residence and get the residence visa after we came back.

For a resident visa we also needed a relationship document which you
can get at the VDC or Municipality. (this might be only valid for
nepali - foreign parents).

What can go wrong:
- No birthcity in birth certificate. Make sure the birth certificate
mentions the city where your child was born, also when your child was
born in Patan Hospital. (Patan Hospital, Lalitpur will do).
- Check your english translation carefully before you go to the
foreign ministry. Are all details and genders correct.
- Make sure that Miss is translated with a dot: Miss. or even better
tell them to leave the Miss, Some countries see Miss <name> as an
extra forname and you don't want that.

Good luck,

Feel free to contact us.
