TerraFormars (Japanese: テラフォーマーズ, Hepburn: Tera Fōmāzu) is a Japanese manga series written by Yū Sasuga [ja] and illustrated by Kenichi Tachibana [ja]. It was originally serialized in Shueisha's seinen manga magazine Miracle Jump from January to December 2011, and was transferred to Weekly Young Jump in April 2012. In an attempt to colonize Mars, 21st century scientists are tasked with terraforming the planet. Their goal is to seed the planet with a modified algae to absorb sunlight and purify the atmosphere, and cockroaches, whose corpses spread the algae across the planet as they feed.

Five hundred years later, the first crewed ship to Mars lands and its six crew members are attacked by giant mutated humanoid cockroaches with incredible physical strength, later labeled "Terraformars"; the crew is wiped out after sending a warning back to Earth. Two years later, BUGS II, a multinational expedition of genetically modified humans, is sent to collect 10 samples of both sexes of roaches, and exterminate the mutated bugs to take control of the red planet. Only two survivors manage to return to Earth, one swearing to return and avenge their fallen companions. As a third expedition is assembled questions are raised about the true origin of the Terraformars and their connection with an unknown disease afflicting mankind, the Alien Engine Virus, or A.E. Virus. To fight the Terraformars' strength and agility, members of the second and third expedition undergo genetic modification to inherit the characteristics of other organisms, only possible after having a special organ implanted with a 36% chance of surviving the surgery itself.

The third expedition ends with most of its crew members killed as well, be it by fighting the Terraformars, or among themselves in the multi-sided conflict between the various factions aboard the ship, each with its own opposing interests. Despite that, the few survivors manage to collect enough samples for the research on a cure to the A.E. Virus and return home. However, a new fight against the Terraformars begins when it is revealed that the creatures arrived on Earth long before. After multiplying at an alarming rate and adapting themselves far better to their new environment than they did on their homeworld, they start their plan to take over the planet.

With the space program attempting to travel to Mars, 21st century scientists were tasked with warming up the planet so that humans could survive on its surface. They came up with an efficient and cost effective plan of sending cockroaches and mold to the surface so that the mold would absorb the sunlight and the insect corpses would serve as a food source for the mold.

It is now the year 2577 and the first manned ship to Mars has landed on the planet and the six crew members are ready for their mission. But what they find are giant mutated humanoid cockroaches with incredible physical strength. The crew members are easily wiped out, but not before sending a transmission back to Earth. Now, humanity will send elite warriors to exterminate the mutated bugs and claim back Mars.

Terraformars (テラフォーマー, Terafōmā) are evolved humanoid cockroaches who lives on Mars. They possess immense strength and endurance and a normal human is no match for them. They also appear to be somewhat intelligent and have a natural hate for humans.

Having retained the abilities of the cockroaches, they have agility, strength, toughness and a sturdy carapace. Thus making them really hard to kill and won't die even if they are smashed. They have also adapted to high temperature and fire. They also possess intelligence and were able to learn how to use advanced weapons left by Bugs #1 crew. read more...

Terraformars (テラフォーマー, Terafōmā?) are evolved humanoid cockroaches who live on Mars. They possess physical traits and skills that greatly surpass those of normal humans while also possessing at least near-human intelligece. All Terraformars exhibit a natural hatred for humans; much like how humans instinctively hate cockroaches which has led to conflict between the Terraformars and humanity.

They are animalistic, adaptable, and bent on survival. They are descendants of cockroaches and seem to bear a sort of instinctive hatred for humanity. . There are many types, and their exact behavior can vary depending on the individual, but they usually keep an emotionless expression on their faces. They don't appear to have much of a society, but the Evolved Terraformars do display a degree of leadership, rallying their brothers into a capable fighting force. Under an Invoker's influence they have sense of community but to them there's is no difference in attachment to their parents than a roadside flower. They also appear to be somewhat intelligent. All Terraformars also have a great work ethic, and since they can't feel pain or exhaustion they're quite liable to literally work themselves to death. These things only serve to help a project an Evolved Terraformar wishes to accomplish.

They prioritize their targets when attacking humans. The first pick is anyone who's holding something (weapons). The second are those who are alone. The third is anyone who's injured and the fourth are female targets.

They still posses cerci and antenna from their roach ancestors. Under their carapace on their back, they have wings, which grants them the ability to fly. (Although Terraformars who bulk up by eating insect protein are too heavy to do so) The Terraformars breathe using trachea all over their body. They can burn amylose polysaccharides for a massive burst of energy. Because they are human-sized, they've evolved lungs which enables them to absorb oxygen more efficiently. Their central nervous system is unchanged, and the body is controlled by the subesophageal ganglion located in the chest, rather than the head. Due to this, a Terraformar can still move even after being decapitated, as long as the subesophagael ganglion is intact and there is an open passage to the lungs.

Their diet used to just consist of the moss seen growing on mars but added in silkworm moths after BUGS 2. On earth it's shown they can eat curry and rice as well as seal meat. Some of them also take vitamin supplements such as crustacean or mollusks types in order to boost their abilities. It's also shown terra formars eat each other when they die as to avoid wasted nutrients.

Little more than 500 years ago, cockroaches together with some moss were sent on Mars, in order to start a Mars Terraforming Project. 500 years later, when the humans revisited Mars, they saw how much the cockroaches have evolved and now have a human like appearance. Due to their massive strength and numbers, they quickly eliminated all of the BUGS1 crew. Due to an endless downpour of space radiation and -80C temperatures, this harsh environment has finally forced the cockroaches, who have not changed their shape in 300 million years to evolve.

Using the BUGS1 spacecraft, a group of Terraformars managed to land on Earth and create a beachhead, unbeknownst to the governments of Earth who believed to have destroyed the craft in orbit. Later when another group of Terraformars arrived on Earth in the Pacific the Nippon-America Alliance attempted to wipe them out using nukes, however before the payload could be launched from a ship at sea, Terraformar infiltrators from the first wave of Terraformars hijacked a civilian plane, crashing it into the ship. Later the Terraformars went underground, after the survivors from the Annex returned, the Terraformars had been responsible for kidnappings all across Japan.
