The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a set of aptitude tests used by the Department of Defense. The test is used as a screener to predict whether potential military candidates are a good fit for the U.S army. There are two different formats of the ASVAB; a computer-based test (CAT) and a paper and pencil version. The computer based format of the ASVAB is given at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). If there is not a MEPS processing station close to you, you can take the paper and pencil version of the ASVAB at a satellite location called a Military Entrance Test (MET) site.
The computer based ASVAB has a total of 145 questions to be completed in 154 minutes. The test is adaptive which means that the questions will increase or decrease in difficulty depending on your answer. This means guessing is not to your advantage and you will be penalized for wrong answers. The paper and pencil ASVAB has a total of 225 questions to be finished within 149 minutes. The written ASVAB covers the same information as the computer based test. This test is not adaptive, so there is no penalty for wrong answers. This means taking an educated guess works to your advantage.
