Welcome to the mid-week Word Waves update, of what’s happening on your
local community radio station, KSVR!

HIGHLIGHT of the WEEK
Maybe this is not exactly a highlight –but it is news to be aware of
and we urge you to take action, to help keep funding needed for all
community radio stations!

This week S 162 was introduced, making it the 6th bill in Congress to
cut or eliminate funding for public broadcasting. Unfortunately the
biggest threat we face is not in the form of a stand-alone bill, but
in the Continuing Resolution (CR) funding legislation for the
remainder of FY2011, which is likely to be voted on in the House of
Representatives next week.

The House CR will likely reduce non-defense, non-security spending by
$55-$60 billion below the FY2010 funding level. It is expected that
these cuts will target specific programs, rather than across the board
reductions. Public broadcasting programs including CPB, CPB Digital,
PTFP, Ready To Learn, and RUS Digital are likely targets for cuts or
elimination in this CR. In addition, amendments to remove any funding
public broadcasting programs do receive in the base CR are likely. It
is critical that stations engage their Members of Congress and
communities in advance of floor votes potentially occurring as soon as
February 14, to urge continued support for federal funding for public
broadcasting.

people are still homeless.

Did you know KSVR is reviving the Skagit Music Show? Every Sunday at
4:30PM in Ford Hall on the campus of Skagit Valley College, a thirty
minute talk and jam session for all musicians will be taking place!
