Welcome to the Monday edition of KSVR Word Waves, a weekly guide to
what's happening on your local radio station!

HIGHLIGHT of the WEEK

Though Word Waves is running a little late today, you dont have to be -
KSVR might sound a little different this week, that's because we're
having our Spring Fund Drive, so be a part of the action, if you're
already a member, consider making a special monetary donation to KSVR,
in celebration of local, community radio -and if you're not a member
yet, this is a great time to join!

joining!

LISTEN and LEARN

If you're tuning in precisely at this second (while you read word
waves) you're listening to a interview on Skagit Talks Monday, May 2,
about the preparation of Hard Cider. Skagit Talks airs every week at
5PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. It's been locally
produced at KSVR Studios for the past four years!

6PM Monday, May 2nd "Democracy Now"
This popular program produced by the team directed by host Amy
Goodman, is just one of the many programs offered over the airwaves by
KSVR. While it may be free for your to listen to, weekdays at 6AM and
6PM, it costs KSVR money to air the program -learn more, with Rip
Robbins, General Manager of KSVR, who will be talking about the
importance of supporting KSVR during the Spring Fund Drive!

5PM Tuesday, May 3rd "Skagit Talks"
It's time for spring and summer sports! Learn about the Mount Vernon
Youth Soccer Association, with Chad Burton, President.

5PM Wednesday, May 4 "Speak Up! Speak Out!"
An hour long fund raising special with comments from Amy Goodman
(Democracy Now!), Laura Flanders (Grit Radio), Jonathon Lawson
(Reclaim the Media), Rip Robbins (General Manager KSVR and KSVU),
members of the Speak Up! Speak Out! collective – and more.

7PM Wednesday, May 4 "Documentary Hour" Marjorie Cohn, editor of the
book “The United States of Torture”, digs into the issue of torture in
the US and carried out by the US around the world.

Midnight Documentary (midnight) Hello Hard Times -
Starts with a rant welcoming the new business Master of Washington.
Then to Greenpeace Brazil, interview with Kiko Brito on the climate
floods there. Feature interview with Nafeez Ahmed, author of "A User's
Guide to the Crisis of Civilization." Ends with a speck of hope.


7PM Thursday, May 5 "Alternative Radio"
In 1915, the Turkish government launched a premeditated organized
campaign to eliminate the millennia-old Armenian people from their
traditional homeland in what is now southeastern Turkey. The Turkish
officials responsible for the genocide were never brought to account.
On tonight's show, Araxie Barsamian, survivor of that genocide, and
Robert Fisk, Middle East correspondent for "The Independent," discuss
the reasons the Turkish government as never acknowledged the event.


6:30AM Saturday, May 7 "Latino Special"
Immigration reform is the hot button issue in the U.S. On this
edition of our Latino Special, people who've risked their lives to
enter the U.S. undocumented share their personal stories of why they
came, and what they hope for their futures and the future of
immigrants in this country.

Thanks to all who participated in the 24th Annual United Farm Worker
Solidarity March, which took place on Sunday May 1st. Marchers
traveled from Maiben Park in Burlington to the Mount Vernon Campus of
Skagit Valley College, and KSVR once again offered live coverage of
this event over the airwaves to the Skagit Community. Check out
pictures from the march at the KSVR Facebook Page, soon pictures will
also be up at the KSVR website.
