The University Grants Commission (UGC) that conducts National Eligibility Test (NET) to identify entrants in teaching profession in higher education has come forward seeking countrymen’s opinion on the present mode of the test. The move came as many academicians time and again put question on the NET as the only national level exam for describing eligibility for lectureship. Taking their side in account, the Commission has uploaded a questionnaire on its website seeking a public opinion on the NET.
The questionnaire contains ten questions on which feedback is sought from all the stakeholders. The answers are to be given in yes or no. In one question, the UGC asked: “Whether NET is an effective tool for identifying entrants in teaching profession in higher education?” Other question seeks people’s opinion on whether there should be an age limit for appearing in NET while another question asks whether the upper age limit of UGC-JRF needs to be raised. The UGC also took criticism over its decision to scrap descriptive mode completely into account and asked people whether NET be conducted in two stages, i.e., screening test in objective mode for Paper I and Paper-II (II+III of existing pattern) followed by main subject examination in descriptive mode.
The UGC has said that any person can give his/her feedback on the NET through the questionnaire. The feedback giver has just has to fill his/her name, mobile number and email address along with category into the form.
