Subject: Prayer request

Hello to you all.

I don't ask for prayer requests very often, but I could use some reinforcement!  During this very long layoff or as I refer to it as my "transitional" phase of life, I've been very fortunate to work contract/temporary positions which have helped to extend my unemployment benefits and I'm on my second round of benefits and have a contract which is hopefully going to last until June.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've been fortunate to have a couple of possibilities for permanent positions and good interviews.  Just today, for one in particular, an Exec. Asst. position, I had 3 phone interviews & 2 meetings, all seeming to be very encouraging, with the HR person strongly emphasizing & complimenting my credentials, as well as their requirement for a PowerPoint presentation of yourself, Excel spreadsheet from narrative instructions and impromptu essay on a persuasive topic, which I did mine entitled as "The Power of Networking", which I'm a firm believer!   The HR rep, who was new to the company of approx. 4 wks, understood what it was to be in layoff, as she had just been able to return to work after a layoff of one (1) year.  Unfortunately, after all of the interviews, encouraging indicators, etc., I didn't get the job.

The other position involved a 2 hr. interview, tour of the facility, introductions, etc. and great compliments, but no job, however, they wanted me for a supervisory position, but unfortunately, it is still to be developed for the future.  I even asked if there was anything I could have done or said differently, asking for feedback.  They were very gracious and told me that I shouldn't change a thing and that they thought "I was great", but was overqualified.  I have begun to despise that word which is just a glorified substitution for "age discrimination" - Ha!

As those who have been in layoff for an extended period, as well as others overall, know how frustrating it is to remain positive.  However, it's evenmoreso, when all indications seem so encouraging.   I think you shouldn't sell yourself short and yet you feel that you have to dumb down your resume' and almost feel that you have to apologize for your experience & knowledge, etc.

Even though disappointed, I'm trying to remain positive and remember that God still has a better opportunity forthcoming.  I would appreciate your prayers and welcome any thoughts that you may have in dealing with the "overqualified" aspect.

I wish you all continued strength and hope in your searches and pray for gainful & fruitful opportunities for us all.

Kindest regards,

Barbara Simmang
