Do any of you have experience in treating pterygium? Here is the case study info. She is from Australia so I am not able to connect with her live and in person so right now just emailing.

Thanks - Any input would be so helpful!

I was hoping you’d give me your opinion on something. I’ve been going to a naturopath, who to date has been fantastic at treating all my old lady ailments J

However, I have two pterygium’s on one eye. To have them removed I will need two operations as they can’t both be done at the same time. My out of pocket cost is over $6,000 and several weeks off work and simply not an option.

My naturopath has me rinsing my eyes in 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar in one cup of water, sort of like eyedrops, twice a day. Stings a bit but not for long. Then cold pressed virgin coconut oil as eyedrops before I go to bed. Nothing seems to be happening in regards to reducing the size or the discomfort, and in fact my eye is sorer and more sensitive than ever, so I am worried I am doing more damage than good. I just can’t imagine that putting vinegar in your eyes is all that sensible. I must admit that the coconut oil if very soothing and as I also suffer with dry eye, I find that when I use the coconut oil before I go to bed I can actually open my eyes in the morning quite easily. Without it, it takes a few minutes and eyedrops before I can open my eyes without discomfort.

What do you reckon? I’d value your opinion and advice.

From what I have looke dup (never heard of this before) it seems like a kapha issue.  So a triphala eye wash, and castor oil drops might be more beneficial than coconut oil, which is kapha in nature. I have done both, for various reasons, and they feel good :)

Best of luck!

Hello Tracy,

I hope is going well.

I remember Dr. Lad teaching that triphala eye wash can be benficial for pterygiums. Also, I just learned that triphala taken in the early am is useful in promoting eye health.

Be Well,

Oh yeah, forgot to mention to stay out of the wind which is considered to be a factor in both Ayurveda and Allopathic medicine. I love when that happens :)

Tracy,
For what it's worth, I found this website, which suggests that pterygium is a pitta disorder associated with liver congestion:
Good luck with the case,
Lynn
