Thefirst step in reducing municipal food waste is data gathering: understanding the amounts and sources of wasted food at the local level, as well as the amounts and sources of surplus food that potentially could be rescued instead of wasted.

Tackling food waste involves the need for diverse strategies in a variety of policy and program areas, and communicating them effectively is essential to building community support for programs and policies aimed at reducing food waste.


Gaining a better understanding of the amounts and sources of wasted food, as well as the amounts and sources of surplus food that potentially could be rescued, is the ideal starting point for ensuring a successful city strategy to reduce food waste.


Cities engaging in food waste initiatives are increasingly interested in assessing how effective those initiatives are, in order to determine where to allocate current and future resources for food waste policies and programs.


Cities interested in reducing food waste should consider ways to involve business sectors in their efforts, particularly those sectors most often linked to higher food waste generation, such as food service.


Given the magnitude of consumer household food waste, cities can play an important role in both raising awareness and providing action-oriented strategies that consumers can implement in their homes to prevent food from being wasted in the first place.


Health departments, particularly health inspectors, are uniquely positioned to educate and inform food facilities about food waste reduction and food donation. In this guide, we outline some of the ways that health inspectors can help educate food facilities on how to prevent wasted food and donate surplus food.


The Food Matters program promotes strategies that can have a significant impact on reducing the amount of food being wasted in the City and County of Denver. As part of this project, Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE) provides food waste-reduction tips and resources to residents and businesses to help everyone waste less food, donate more food, and expand composting efforts.


Each lesson consists of one video, tips for parents, and research. Access to a variety of healthy recipes, diabetes information, and more is also available. All videos and materials can be reviewed by participants at their own pace.


When children experience growth spurts, they need additional protein for muscle growth, calcium, and vitamin D to accommodate bone growth, and iron for overall tissue growth. Children will therefore need more energy or calories during these spurts.


Research on healthy eating for children and teens identifies how much food from each food group is required for their growth, development, and activity. With these in mind, we created healthy recipes for you and your family to cook at home with low cost and short cook and prep times.


Food Matters-Baltimore is advancing food waste reduction, food rescue and food scrap recycling citywide. Since the implementation of the program, BOS has committed the city to reduce half of all wasted food generated in the city by 2030. To reach this goal, BOS is implementing community-led solutions and programs, creating stronger linkages between food rescue stakeholders and food insecure residents and providing capacity building funds to current food waste reduction efforts in the city. Our current projects include: (1) the implementation of a decentralized community composting program with multiple drop-off locations in the city, (2) the Save The Food Campaign designed to educate consumers about practices which prevent edible food from going to waste, and (3) food rescue expansion via the Feeding America MealConnect App.


Working with amazing local graphic artist Yifan Luo (@yifanluoart), the Baltimore Food Matters team has created a brochure and tip sheet to help educate and shift mental models around composting and food waste reduction, which you can download here and learn more about here.


\"Aglanta\" is a digital food hub for all things urban agriculture in Atlanta, Georgia. This is inclusive of all types of production, aggregation, distribution, consumption, and restoration of local food in the city. Aglanta wants you to learn about the cultural, economic, ecologic, and nutritional value of hyperlocal food movement.


Over the next two years, the City of Philadelphia will pursue several projects to tackle food waste citywide, made possible by the support of two separate funding and technical assistance awards. Philadelphia will receive technical assistance from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) as part of its Food Matters Project expansion into the MidAtlantic region and will collaborate with four other cities to pilot innovative strategies to tackle food waste locally.


Learning methods include hands-on cooking, experiential learning activities, patient education resources, and case-based discussions. The course provides practical application of these food and nutrition principles to self-care and patient care for health professionals in an interprofessional, collaborative environment.


Co-taught by a physician and chef/culinary nutrition educator, Food Matters will cover the role of food, lifestyle, and cooking in preventative health and wellbeing. Learn more about teachers Jenny Breen and Kate Shafto.


In support of improving patient care, University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
