------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the first Krusader Newsletter of 2007 with news, views and
information about recent developments and ongoing issues in the
Krusader project. Our aim is to inform of recent developments, give a
preview of upcoming features and to let our loyal users have a direct
line to the Krusader Krew.

Krusader 1.80.0-beta1 "The Last Krusade" released!
**************************************************************

On 7-January-2007 Krusader 1.80.0-beta1 was released [1] [2], this
time no feature freeze was done, so new features are already comitted
in cvs and development continues. The 1.8x series will become the last
series for KDE3. Efforts to port the 1.8x series to KDE4 will be done
in the coming months, at that moment Krusader-2.x for KDE4 is born.

The first Krusader release was Krusader-M1 (milestone 1) in May 2000
for KDE 2 (Kleopatra 1.91) [3], Krusader-1.0 for KDE2 was released at
1 January 2002 after many 0.x releases. Seven years after the first
Krusader release, Krusader2.x for KDE4 will become available.

Krusader supports ACL permissions
*******************************************
Thanks to Csaba Karai ACL permission handling is now implemented in
Krusader [4] [5], this feature is available in Krusader 1.80.0-beta1.

Krusader supports Brief View
***********************************
It was requested many many times by several users, but difficult to
implement into the code ... but finally the Brief View feature was
added in Krusader-cvs [6] [7]. Brief View was ranked number 2 on the
feature voting system [8]. To use it: "View Menu -> view -> Brief
View", and to return to the original view "View Menu -> view ->
Detailed View" or the keybord shortcuts ALT+SHIFT+B for Brief view and
ALT+SHIFT+D for Detailed View. The number of brief columns can be
changed, by right clicking on the "Name" header. More details can be
found on Krusader-devel [9]. Thanks to Shie and Csaba for writing this
feature[9].
Please note that this feature was added after the release of Krusader
1.80.0-beta1, so you need to compile Krusader-cvs to use it.

linux.com: file managers, the first choice has to be Krusader
**********************************************************************
Bruce Byfield has done a survey of Linux file managers at Linux.com,
the conclusion: the first choice has to be Krusader [10] [11] [12].
By far the most promising file manager for the desktop is a KDE
application called Krusader. With its use of function keys and its
ability to call external applications as needed, Krusader looks more
like a direct descendant of the Norton Commander clones than other
modern file managers. With its abilities to search archives, compress
files in a variety of formats, encrypt, and show disk usage in a chart
in a separate window, Krusader is easily the most powerful file
manager for the modern desktop.

However, for those who have always relied on file managers, the
first choice has to be Krusader. Combining the centralized
functionality of earlier generations with the look and feel of modern
applications, Krusader is by far the most complete of the file
managers I've mentioned.
Krusader 1.70.x distribution news
*****************************************
Distrowatch.com only tracks stable releases, so there is no
distribution information about Krusader 1.80.0-beta1.
Distrowatch.com reports 19 (=) distibutions that provide
Krusader-1.70.0 [18] and 24 (+1) distros that provide Krusader-1.70.1
[19]. Some distributions have released distro updates or beta
releases. Be aware that Distrowatch.com only checks the initial
release of a distro, so updates and backports are not always reported
in this list. Some other distros use repositories where Krusader can
be downloaded and installed, such as from the Fedora Extras
repository. Knoppix has released a new version and updated Krusader
with Krusader-1.70.1: KNOPPIX: 5.1.1 [20].
