One of the most important statements in the Yoga Sutras, concerns the
exploitation of the blank gap which is assumed by the mind between a
vanishing idea and an emerging one. Science is hot on the track of
this gap in terms of the neural activity in the brain. Science has its
own reasons for studying this gap but in yoga it is absolutely vital
if one wants to reach samadhi and if one wants to develop supernatural
and spiritual perception thus abandoning spiritual blindness.

Patanjali was clear that a yogin has to find that gap and then hold
the attention there in order to prolong it so that the emerging idea
is prevented from manifesting. When this is done the idea-machine in
the mind, the buddhi or analytical orb, may shift into high gear and
one may be able to have supernatural or spiritual perception, thus
getting rid of the long history of spiritual ignorance and void
detection.

Patanjali super-instruction about yogah cittavritih nirodhah means
that one has to dis-empower the idea-machine but one cannot do that
unless one exploits this gap, because so long as the analytical orb is
involved with the creation and dissolution of idea, the self is
enslaved by it and cannot take command of the idea-manufacturing
psychic mechanism. And the key is to find that gap and hold on to it.
