Visit to : school run by 'Vanvasi kalyan ashram' in Dattanagar (near maangaon on mumbai-goa road)
Date: 12 Oct 2008.

In the earlier visit, kritagnyata team have identified some of the problems in which we can help them.
As a part of this, we decided to rescue their computer lab.

In this visit, we planned to do:
1. Fix some of the hardware problems (replacing the components if necessary).
2. Format the virus infected computers and reinstall OS, and other software.
3. Connect computer output to TV screen via S-video card.

Objective was to maximize the number of 'usable ' computers in the lab.
subject to the constraint imposed by train schedule (About 5 hours in our hand).
[we were not there for formulating this optimization mathematically. :P]

To execute this 'best of effort' service we followed 'just do it' greedy strategy.
We were able to transform 8 machines into usable state. Also finished with TV output.
But, we could not get enough time to look at all the machines.

Kale sir from the school who looks after the computer lab helped us a lot. Also he was enthu about knowing how to do these maintenance task.
We have given him some basic tips for quick fixes to minor problems.

Some insights:
1. Currently this school is upto IXth. Next year they will have their first passing out batch from Xth.
2. Most of these students would be the first generation of their family doing the formal schooling.
(I feel this achievement is more creditable than a school having a board topper passing out. )
3. This student hostel have about 35 to 50 students living per hall.
(I feel ashamed for my cribbing last year for not having a single room.)
4. Govt. provides funds only for the teachers salary and food for children.
All other expenses are met from donations from some private organizations/people.
5. There are many other such organizations/places in which we can contribute something.
Only thing we need to do is "give it a serious thought and come forward".

We will be planning some more activities for this. If you are interested in joining such activities (of course after you are done with this peak load time) please join us at 'kritagnyata'.

Special Thanks to : all the volunteers who helped us [both on-site and offshore :)].
