Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Gurudeva.
Lord Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita verse 9.26
patram pushpam phalam toyam / yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakti upahrtam / ashnaami prayataatmanah
"If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit a water, I will accept it."
The word ashnaami generally means 'eating'. However it also refers to 'accept' or 'consume'. Here when the Lord says 'ashnaami', it not only means eating, but consuming. i.e He tastes the fruit and smells the flower. In the next verse, the Lord says
yad karoshi yad ashnaasi / yad juhosi dadhaasi yat
yat tapasyasi kaunteya / tad kurushva mad arpanam
"Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, and whatever austerities you perform – do that, O son of Kunti, as an offering to Me."
Here also the word ashnaasi is used and it can mean not only eating, but also any item we consume or use - like we wear dress, we apply sandalwood paste for good smell, we wear jewels, flowers, watch and children play with toys etc. In marketing terms, all companies use the word 'consumer' to denote the people who consume items. So when the Lord says 'yad ashnaasi', it means that whatever items we consume, are to be offered to the Lord and then we can partake of the Lord's prasadam. I personally know of a very senior devotee and disciple of Srila Prabhupada who has a Gopal deity and worships Him with so much of love. He buys different kinds of toys including toy credit cards and offers to the deity.
Now one may question, "How come any item first offered to the Lord or accepted by Him gets significance?"
Recently I was reading some articles which stated that the chair which was used by J.K.Rowling (author of Harry Potter novel series) was auctioned for 3,49,000 British pounds. One person bought it for this huge price since J.K.Rowling sat on this chair and wrote the famous Harry potter novel. Similarly, the dress and other articles used by the famous pop singer Michael Jackson and Princess Diana were auctioned for huge prices (in terms of thousands of pounds). Why such articles are auctioned for high prices and become popular? It is because they are accepted and consumed first by great people, who are very famous and successful materially. If this is the case with the great people of this world, then what to speak of the Supreme Lord who is the greatest of all personalities and whose greatness is Supreme, innate (not acquired through hard work or good karma) and whose greatness is not destroyed by time? Anything which is offered to Him and accepted by Him and given to us as His remnants have infinite value. That value will be spiritual and lead to spiritual uplift of those who consume His remnants. Not only the Lord's remnants, but the remnants of the Lord's devotees also can give great spiritual benefits to those who consume them.
Krishna willing, let us meditate on a few more aspects on this subject in further offerings.
