As a new member I am searching the online S.C.A. calendars to see what to attend next year. I have seen Suth Moot over Easter. Can I camp in a non period tent?

Thank you for your help! I will drop by next year for a visit, what is your regular meeting night? I only do archery not combat activities. But am interested in all other activities.

We do archery at our weekly fighter training at Monash University,
it's usually on Friday nights from 8pm in the northwestern multistorey
carpark :)
It's obviously not on this week, but it'll start again asap.
It's not only fighters that go, it's often more a social event than
training :)

If you can't, I'm in serious trouble....

I'm always happy to see another bard!  I'm looking forward to meeting you already!
I'll be another bard in a mundane (non-period)  tent. :)

If I understand correctly, period tents will be placed in the middle
of the campsite to create a medieval atmosphere, while the majority of
us who only dream of period tents will be camping around the fringes
of camp where we won't constantly jar us out of the medieval feel.
But I don't think the campsite is so big that it will be a significant
difference in distance.

I believe there are/were also some cabins available.

As Katie said, archery is Fridays. Dancing, and music (primarily dance
music, but not only) is also Fridays, at 6 to fit before fighter
training at 8.

The Friday meetings are Krae Glas' only weekly stuff - the rest is
monthly - but Stormhold and Arrowsreach have weekly meetings of other
things.

Arrowsreach's Monday training has fortnightly singing (whenever Master
Dafydd is there to lead it).

Stormhold has dancing and music on first, third, and fifth Thursdays,
with other A&S on the remaining weeks. I'm not sure if any A&S happens
at their Tuesday meeting, as I've never been there.

Hope this helps,
Estel / Theophilus

Stormhold Tuesdays do indeed include a Craft Hall inside while the heavies hit each other outside. 'Craft Hall' usually means 'chatting for a couple of hours', although most people have some sort of project in their hands while they do it...
It can be a great place to pick the brains of some very talented people when you're unsure of something.

I didn't know that! as soon as I no longer have things impinging on my
diaphragm and other support muscles I can see this being a regular
thing with Zhou and I! win :) (well, he'll do the fighting, it'll give
me something to do too ;)

Lisette (missing singing terribly, I didn't know pregnancy affected
singing quite so much)

But having a baby is also meant to improve your singing voice, which I was
told by a professional singer. Maybe the benefit comes AFTER the baby stops
squishing your innards though.

Thank you all very much for the valuable info. I have been hanging out at Stormhold on Tuesday nights and indeed have been asking as many questions as I could think of and everyone there have been very very helpful. Look out for a lost soul on Friday the 15th of January. I will be back from hols then. I am looking forward to dropping in for a visit. See you at 6pm-ish. Where is good to park?

Lisette, if you've ever had ambitions to be a bass a baby is just the
thing! I dropped from mezzo sop to alto after two babies- although my
singing teacher assures me my upper range will come back if I work at it.
Now we have to get the kids singing some period children's songs- are
there such things?

Does Ring Around the Rosie count?  *grin*

Lisette, you can also attend the monthly sing on Sundays with us in Stormhold.

Dizzy (who would also delighted attend the every other Monday for singing if she didn't live on the furthest arse end of nowhere from Arrowsreach)

lol! whereas Stormhold is much the same for me! way too far away :) and this way Zhou and I will have a chance to go together, rather than his being bored :)

it's interesting to hear that the voice changes after pregnancy, I know it did when one's periods first starts but not during pregnancy. interesting! I keep working at singing at home so I don't have as much work to catch up on afterwards, but the ability to sustain and really support are pretty much not there and my range at either extremity has dwindled..  ah well, not long to go now, then I can start building back up by singing lullabies :)

My voice didn't really change with pregnancy, but I grew 1/2 inch with each of my first two kids, instead.  *lol*  I already sang tenor and nothing changed so perhaps mine just couldn't drop any lower!

Hope you are surviving pregnancy and heat okay there.  I had a summer birth (my first child) and  well... ugh.  Not fun for this little Eskimo.

With a new one on the way, you might be interested in one of the traditional lullaby type songs I have learned over the years.  You can find full lyric and midi at: http://www.ukmagic.co.uk/song_english/oh_rest_thee_babe.html

May your holidays be merry.

I often put Elise to sleep with songs that remind me of my youth... Smells Like Teen Spirit works well, as does Enter Sandman. I didn't find my voice changed during pregnancy either, though.
