Just thought I'd point it out if anyone didn't notice, not trying to
influence decisions or anything. I'm on the fence myself.

I played competitive badminton for a long time, my association
required players be paid up at the start of the season. However, that
fee covered a number of things the association had to pay for, such as
badminton equipment (courts and their maintenance, shuttles are
expensive and quickly ruined, first aid), insurance, advertising and
paying the engraver to make our pretty trophies. My club also ran
fundraisers for a few years to pay for the upgrade from painted
asphalt courts to a sprung timber floor, and players were organised
into grades. Some tournaments were organised via selection, with the
cost covered by the club, and some were open but required a
registration fee to pay for the things I listed before.
Comparing that with SCA fighting, fighters supply all their own gear,
and the cost of the venue still comes out of their pockets rather than
their membership (like paying for events). First aid depends on the
group, and for lower level competition, fighters generally fight more
for honour than a trophy or something and the system is (mostly)
organised into those who are awesome fighters and those who are so-so,
and all are pitted against each other regardless. I don't know all the
insurance details, but if Alfar is right, the SCA's insurance doesn't
cover much, but again, I really don't know anything in that area.
(If I'm wrong about anything, feel free to correct me).
My opinion was that fighters shouldn't have to be members unless they
want to be, for purposes such as legal possession of swords and
things. I'm only a member because of the pay to fight thing, frankly I
feel the membership in general is $25 just for snobbery. Though if
anyone can tell me differently, go for it :)
>Will this limit the scope of fighting in the future?
Ask Tom how many people went to College War just after the pay to
fight thing came into being.
