Subject: [Taclug-General] demo Linux @ Puyallup Fair?

Hey,

I'm sending this to four groups: Linux, Tacoma Area PC Users Group, NWAP
and South Sound Adobe Users Group... why?

Glad you asked. I have noticed that hobby hall never has computers
exhibited. I would like for the four groups mentioned above to discuss
doing four days at the fair. Sharing what their group is about. Demoing
software, sharing downloads, giving out meeting info, etc. Interested?

Fair Schedule: 9/11-9/27

Plan: take both Tues and Thurs slots all day
Have tables set up with wi-fi
Have members share what they do.
Eg. Linux might show how Ubuntu runs on a Mac or PC
Adobe UG might show how to doctor a photo
NWAP might show OS X and how an application like the dock works
TAPCUG might demo the use of Vista and some of its new features
All groups could hand out flyers. The point would NOT be to bad mouth
another group, but to be positive about your group.

Does this sound interesting? You can quit complaining about not getting
the word out about your group and do something! Yeah!

Why only four days? The fair is 17 days @ 12-13 hours a day. I don't
think our groups, even combined could do it. Do you? So I asked for set
days for the schedule. I must tell them by the end of the month. We
could throw in a Sat or Sun, if there was enough support.

I figure 4 days, 4 groups, 12 hour days = 3 hour shifts

I figure min. 2 people per shift, prefer 3 and more is fine up to 6

Fair would provide wi-fi (if not available they'd provide ethernet and
we'd rig our own wi-fi) [the lady I spoke with 20 minutes ago didn't
know if wi-fi was available to the public, but she has a meeting this
afternoon and will get back to me]

They will provide two 6' tables and 18-24 chairs

We provide enthusiastic people, computers, handout, cd's — if you wish, etc.

What does your group think? This is happening right now... the planning.
No comments= no feedback=not interested

PS
Some of you may get this multiple times, depending upon how I have you
listed in my database: some are listed mac, linux, adobe, some are just
one... etc. Sorry for any duplicity. This is a one time mailing and will
not be repeated. IF you want info to continue you must email me back and
request to be kept in the loop.

Hey Brian;

Thanks for the email. Depending on my employment situation, I may be
able to take part in this. Do you have any specific plans. (my
question mark key is broken, so all places that should have a question,
will not)

I'm still looking for work since being displaced from the closure of
Urban USA. May have a good opportunity over at SeaTac airport, working
on PDP-11's to even doing some maintenance on a CPM system. As you can
guess, this is definitely not doing baggage handing, but teaching pilots
how to safely fly their planes.... go figure. I go for my 3rd interview
later this week, but it's looking good at this point. Now to brush up
on my CPM skills. And to think I thought it was a dead OS.

I've got some spare keyboards here if you need one :)

I don't have any plans to participate. If you want to, contact Kathryn.
Hmm, looks like it didn't include her email in the post. k...@wamail.net

Good luck with the job hunt!

Thanks for the comments, my laptop is a Dell C600 series and I've been
looking for a replacement for a while, to no avail. Found one in Canada
but wasn't able to get back in time to get it. Once I get a job, I plan
on upgrading my laptop, still undecided as to whether get a Dell
preloaded with Ubuntu, or make the transition to a MacBook Pro. Anyone
have any recommendations.

I have a spare keyboard for a Dell inspiron 8600, don't know if it would fit a C600 or not. The letters are worn off a few keycaps but other than that it works. If you do decide to go with another PC, check out xoticpc.com, I bought my wife a Sager NP-2096 last year and it has been a good unit so far. I believe you can buy without and OS too.
