Why would schools want to use Linux?
Because it is the future. Once the schools can "see" the future, then using Linux and open source is obvious.
(note: it isn't a choice of MS or open source - both are used side by side - for now.)
I trust you get my point.

How do we know this?
www.top500.org  - see what the worlds super computers run.
See how many cell phones run Linux.
What does Google run?
What does Yahoo run?
How much does IBM spend on open source and Linux?
How about Intel, HP, Oracle, even Microsoft.

find some useful URLs at the bottom of below page
and for open source in general

I should try to update, and any suggestions - please Email me.

Schools should want to prepare students for the future, and with messed up Patent system on software here in the US along with high costs of Microsoft products, the rest of the world is adopting open source and Linux. Check it out.

I'm not arguing with you about Linux.. I agree with you and have all linux machines and servers. But when you get outside the Linux/Opensource group of people, that is definitely not the perception. It is purely Windows or Windows vs. Mac not Windows vs. Linux.

I know. I've been there, making those proposals. The "Why not Windows?" will be the hurdle you will spend all your time getting over, not the implementation or anything else. It is extremely frustrating.

If the school trusts you or if you have a champion (trusted by the school) on the inside, then maybe it will not soak up all your time. If some schoolboard member says "But my brother-in-law, who is a computer expert, says Linux is hard to use..", then all of a sudden, you will be  back in re-selling mode instead of getting it done mode....

I was there in the IBM years. Why would anyone not use IBM? That was the mindset, now it will be windows.
