I'm an Ubuntu Netbook user currently teaching English in China and ever
since arriving I've noticed that I cannot get a stable internet
connection at work or home. At the office and at the apartment where I
live I am using wireless routers made by a company called Tenda. My
connection frequently cuts out for no apparent reason, and I am lucky if
I have 5 minutes of uninterrupted browsing time. It has nothing to do
multiple users on the same network, I experience the same problem when I
am the only one in the apartment, and when everyone else in (there are
three of us) is asleep. Once the signal cuts out, it can take half an
hour or more to get it back. Even when I have a signal, it is much
weaker than if I were using Windows 7, and what is a 100% signal in 7 is
a 50-60% maximum signal in Ubuntu. For this reason, even though there is
Skype for linux, I am forced to use Skype on Windows 7 in order to have
a strong enough signal to talk to my family.
By contrast, when I am using my Windows 7 partition I have no problems
whatsoever and experience stable connection for as long as I am on the
internet. When using Skype the connection is clear and does not skip,
and when downloading large files I do not come back an hour later to
find that the download was interrupted.
I'm trying to diagnose the problem that I have. It could be that Ubuntu
is simply incompatible with the wireless router I use at home and work.
Is there some change I could make that you would recommend?
Also, is there a particular secure VPN proxy server that anyone would
recommend so that I can get past the great firewall of China (the
browser that blocks all things useful like Youtube, etc)? I'm trying to
learn how to use proxy servers so I can get unfiltered internet access
here in China.
I would appreciate any help. Thanks!
