Big Changes for Utility Companies and Rate Increases

(WR) have approved the pending merger related proposals, thereby paving the way for the completion of the transaction in the spring of 2017. (See Yahoo Finance)

Empire District Electric Company filed a request with the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) for changes in rates for its Kansas customers. The Company is seeking an annual increase in base rate revenues of approximately $6.4 million, or about 25.7 percent. If approved by the KCC, a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours would see a monthly increase of about $31.85. The Environmental Recovery charge currently collected for Kansas customers will be discontinued at the time the new rates are effective. (See Businesswire

City Utility customers could see an increase in their monthly bills over the next five years. In a summary CU provided to Springfield City Council, it shows the average monthly bill for a single household family in 2016 as $187.09. In 2021 it's $225.79. (See Ozarksfirst

Ameren Missouri made two filings with the Commission. In its first filing (Case No. ER- 2017-0024), Ameren Missouri proposed to adjust the FAC to reflect changes in its fuel and purchased power costs, net off-system sales revenues and associated transportation experienced during the four month period of February 2016 through May 2016. The second filing was Ameren Missouri’s FAC true-up (Case No. ER-2017-0025). For a residential customer using 1,105 kWh per month, the FAC will increase by approximately $0.57 a month. The change is expected to take effect during the October billing month. (See The Caldwell County News).

Some Completed Commercial Solar Installations in Kansas

Grant County Bank of Ulysses, KS has gone Solar.

Good Energy Solutions first reduced the amount of energy used at Grant County Bank by replacing 1200 light bulbs with LEDs. The lighting energy savings is 105,000kWh/yr and peak demand savings is 19kW. The solar generation is projected to be 170,000kWh/yr.  Their previous year's energy bills ranged from $2,500 to $3,300.  Their new bills should range from $800 to $1,500, an average saving of about $1,800/month.

After the installation of the 384 solar panels and implementation of monitoring, the system generated approximately 525kW within the first 24 hours. That is equivalent to the CO2 emissions of approx. 394 lbs of coal burned.

Commercial Solar Installation in Topeka, KS
This is an all electric office building.  The business owner first reduced their energy use by installing LED lighting in 2015 and high efficiency blowers this year in their HVAC system. They wanted to cover their entire roof with solar to reduce as much of the remaining energy usage as possible.  The 43.7kW Solar Array consists of 168 solar panels.

In 2014 before the LEDs were installed, the energy use was over 198,000kWh with bills totaling over $26,000.  Since then, there have been two rate hikes, and the new annual energy usage is expected to be around 94,000kWh. Even with two rate hikes since 2014, the bills should be around $11,000.
