It has been a trend for a while. Google docs has version control. Wikipedia (and the wikimedia engine) has/have version control. I have a few friends who maintain their blogs on github and serve from there. 

But you are right. For some people who are in a different discipline to think in terms of version control is amazing.

Very impressive. I wish I had automated version control 20 years ago. I remember I worked on an interesting project for a few days when I was doing BE in AU Chennai. Late at night, I issued the command while I was half-asleep:
rm -rf *
Boom - all files were gone! Several days' worth of work was gone in a minute :-( Luckily it was my own project & I did not need to show/deliver it to any one.
