Newhere, probably going to screw this up. Im using Sketchup Make 2016. A couple months ago I modeled something, exported as stl, and printed. No problem. went to model something three weeks ago and the export as an stl is no longer an option. Where did my plugin go? Warehouse says its not there anymore. Not great. To make it better, I sent the dae which appears to be the default now to a buddy to see if he could convert it for me, and the file apparently cannot be converted either. My buddy and I suspect there is now new code written into an update to corrupt the file so it cannot be converted thereby forcing an annual subscription for the hobbyist user. Not ideal. Nothing has changed with my system.

Right away? great presumption. Ive only been trying to sort this for weeks. What you state should be there is no longer there when it once was. Now its only export as dae or kmz. But thanks. I appreciate being ridiculed for my observation and conclusions from so much time trying to sort this.

In any case, one of the foundations of the SU workflow process is being able to customize your own UI over a stripped down version of every other 3D modeling application on the market. To not have any support for plugins is to change the package at a core conceptual level.

Apps are not allowed to offer to their end users, the ability to download, for within their apps, additional executable code from an external service. Extensions would either have to be preinstalled or be available as separate apps via the App Store.

I guess it would be asking too much for Trimble to use the obvious solution. Include the extensions in Ipad for Sketchup.

The extensions have become just another way of the nickel and dime charges for extensions that should be included in Sketchup. That way the actual cost of a subscription does not double or triple in price by the time you actually add in tools through extensions that sometimes are basic functions one would expect. Instead Trimble just throws out one or two new features each year and cranks up the profit machine.

There could also be basic a package for Architecture, Landscape, Construction etc that is selected when installed that would include some of the essential missing functions for experienced users that Sketchup lacks.

Although building some extensions into SketchUp for Ipad would be nice, bear in mind that Trimble does not own the intellectual property rights of those extensions. They would have to buy it from the extension authors or risk lawsuits for stealing IP. If they did that for a lot of extensions it would likely have an impact on the subscription price.

This allows each project to have its own folder, corresponding to a Git repo. Each such folder has a src folder corresponding to what will become the RBZ, but also allows additional folders, e.g. for unit tests, 3D models icons are based on etc. I know ThomThom does something similarly, but explicitly lists projects to load rather than iterating all possible projects.

While we are at the topic of debugging - the debugger is really great for seeing what is going on without having to add/remove puts statements: GitHub - SketchUp/sketchup-ruby-debugger: Ruby API debugger for SketchUp 2014 and later.

i just downloaded and installed OpenStudio 1.11.0 for Mac aaaaaaand... nothing. The installer placed a folder in the //Applications directory, but i have yet to find a sketchup plugin (.rb or .rbz file) The extensions are not listed under preferences and there's nothing in the tool pallets. I'm at a loss for the next step.

Thanks for the quick reply! I was running SU2013, but then read the install instructions, which lead me to believe i needed SU2016 - So I installed SU2016 last night then reinstalled OpenStudio. A check of both '13 and '16 folders per your direction yielded only the standard su_* plugins (camera, sandbox, trimble connect, etc). I can't see any Open Studio plugins, I'm sorry to say. I could do a global search for the file if i knew the name. Thoughts? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I'm a total noob when it comes to this software, so I'm not sure who David or Dan are. Any referral is appreciated. I've checked every location possible, including the Package Contents for SU '13 and '16 with no luck. The plugin is not on my computer. Dumb question - has it been verified that it's included in the install package? i opened the package contents of the installer and couldn't find it. Dumber question - could someone just send it to me? Thanks!

@cadm0nkey make sure you are using the 64bit installer of SketchUp vs. the 32 bit installer. Also SketchUp 2016 is the preferred version, so you can un-install earlier versions. If you didn't already have the 64bit version installed, run the OpenStudio installer again after installing the 64bit version. Also can you let me know what version of mac OS you are on? It will help us to try and reproduce what you are seeing.

If that doesn't work this thread shows you how to manually copy the plugin files from the installer to SketchUp plugin's folder.

Hi David, thanks for checking into this. My understanding is that Sketchup2016 for the Mac only comes in the 64-bit flavor. There's only one download file available from Trimble and I do not recall an option during install for 32/64 bit. I understand that this is an option only available for Windows users. My current version of OS X is 10.10.5. Thanks for the link to the alternate thread, but that resolves the issue on a Windows machine. Again, I can manually install OpenStudio.rb - if I had a file to install. Thanks!

I just updated the answer with Mac screenshots of where to copy the plugin from and to. Also please go under the SketchUp "Preferences" menu and then "Extensions" and confirm if "OpenStudio" is listed and checked.

OK, I figured it out. When I created an account at EnergyPlus, I must have stayed on their page and downloaded the latest version of EnergyPlus 8.5.0 - the folder that was installed in my Applications directory. In my defense, the pages look nearly identical. I got the correct install file and everything works like a charm! Like I said, I'm a total noob. Looking forward to diving in! I'm sure you'll hear from me again. Thanks, everyone, for your patience. Cheers!

Many of you, though, will already be familiar with the basics of SketchUp and want to take your modeling skills to the next level. While the tools that come with the software are useful for most everyday tasks, anyone who has used SketchUp for more than a few days will know that there are a plethora of plugins out there that facilitate amazingly complex forms and ingenious time-saving processes.

Among its many functions, this hugely useful plugin enables you to create an array along a path. A series of components can be quickly placed in a predefined arrangement, perfect for balustrades like the one shown above. A full tutorial can be found here, and you can download the plugin here.

One of the most ingenious plugins on this list, Helix Along Curve enables you to create helix tubing along a predefined path. When combined with Bezier Spline and Component Stringer add-ons, you can also model a perfect chain with individual links. A full tutorial on constructing the form above is available here, and you can download the Helix Along Curve plugin here.

Simply add a face to your section plane with this useful plugin. The face can be quickly modified, changing its color for presentation purposes, and it can also be set to update automatically as you edit your model. The add-on can be downloaded here.

When combined with the QuadFaceTools plugin, SubD can be used to produce curvilinear volumes like the one shown above with clean, rationalized subdivisions. This is helpful when modeling complex domes and parametric shells. SubD can be downloaded here, while QuadFaceTools can be found here.

Another brilliant extension created by Fredo6, Animator enables you to creating moving parts with your SketchUp model with ease. Simply create the first and last frames of the movement you want, then hit play and watch your dynamic model shift into motion. Download Animator here.
