There are many others like those above but I purposely selected few "notables" knowing they are not strangers to your readings of history, literature, classical music, current events and world affairs.

Except the last, which is a fictional character from Rizal’s NOLI, they all sport Basque names or traced their ancestry from the Basque country in Northern Spain.

Rizal’s long sojourn in Europe especially in Spain has given him so much knowledge of this hardworking and industrious people whose language is equally mysterious as their ethnic origin.

In the NOLI, Rizal introduced his readers describing the lineage or ancestry of Crisostomo Ibarra. We learned that the original name “Ibarramendia” was shortened to IBARRA” by Don Saturnino. The first Ibarramendia showed up in San Diego and bartered clothes and jewelry in exchange of land with the people who claimed to be owners in that forested area of Rizal’s typical Philippine fictional town.  Later the old patriarch was found hanging in the balete tree. Rizal’s gruesome description found its popularity in today’s milieu on ghost and paranormal stories.

Most of us who read the NOLI and connect it to the FILI, knew that Crisostomo, was the only son of Don Rafael Ibarra who left the Philippines to Spain to further his education. Seven years after, he returned home bringing with him “radical” ideas that shocked the “establishment” especially the Catholic Church. Teaching the natives the rudiments of reading, writing and arithmetic is a radical departure to what the Spaniards and the priests want them. Certainly it will disturb the status quo.

In the NOLI, our man, Crisostomo displayed himself as one who advocated the need for education to improve the life and outlook of the people. Then the man we know as Crisostomo who traced his Basque heritage became Simoun in the FILI who would love to foment and create chaos among the native Indios and bribe the government officials sent by Spain so that in the long run he can launch “revolution”, a violent way to secure independence for the hapless Indios!  But Father Florentino, Rizal’s alter ego in the FILI lamented in the end when he said,  “what good is INDEPENDENCE if the slaves of today are the TYRANTS of tomorrow”!

In his veins, Crisostomo Ibarra is Euskadi-Tagalog because Crisostomo’s mother came from a native Magpayo family. This gives Rizal a good excuse to give Crisostomo Ibarra, who is a "half breed", "Creole" or mesztizo rather than a native Indio named Elias.

Rizal's raison d'être choosing Magpayo  as  Crisostomo's middle name because of its native literal meaning "to advise", "to translate" or "to mix". This  makes Crisostomo the best combination, the best of both worlds, Iberian and Tagalog cultures.

The struggles being waged by the present-day Basques Separatists started by their forebears many hundred years ago the struggle and up to this day still clamoring for an independent homeland. With its military arm, ETA, the Basques continue relentlessly dreaming and hoping to unite the four Basque regional provinces in Spain and three from France until one day will come an independent “Basque Nation”.   IF  they only have a Jose Rizal to inspire them!

IF ONLY…………………

Meteorology 101:

... Typhoons are the result of the rising moist air masses in the equatorial zones and the  earth's rotation. The earth's rotation tends to spin the rising air mass faster as it gathers more warm moist air on its path, building up its rotational energy. Those hurricanes visiting the US are born west of the Caribbean sea. Those bred in the South Seas in the South Pacific when they move northeasterly towards the Philippines spin clockwise; if they move towards Australia they spin counter clockwise; Aussies call them cyclones.
... Typhoons do not usually pass through the Visayan Islands, much less skim the northern part of Mindanao. As they are hatched in the equatorial belt around the South Seas they move towards the Philippine Sea, and because they seek the path of least resistance, like a spinning top, they bounced off from sizable land masses like the Leyte and Samar mountains. This is the reason why typhoons always as a general rule rampage through the Bicol area, because the Southern Luzon terrain is relatively flat (except for a the isolated Mayon volcano). Continuing its northeasterly direction they either proceed north of the Sierra Madre range, rampaging through the Cagayan valley provinces; or, find some gap around the Banahao mountain in Laguna and the Mindoro mountain - in which case Central Luzon and Metro Manila gets the whacking!
... The odd case where the typhoon finds the gap along the  Surigao Strait between Surigao and Leyte, it moves along the Mindanao Sea towards the West Philippine Sea (or South China Sea), then onwards to Vietnam. This happens about 10% of the time in my own recollection growing up in Bohol. We always hear about typhoon devastation in Bicol and Luzon, but Southern Visayas and  Mindanao always enjoyed a relative calm. Well, this time it's the 10% odd chance.

Environmental Science 101:
... I understand there was not much wind power, but the heavy rains coming down on the deforested mountains resulted into the floods catching people unprepared. All major population centers in Mindanao (or for that matter all over the world) are located on river estuaries. The cities of Butuan, Gingoog, Butuan, Iligan, Surigao - are all found at the mouth of major rivers. With climate change resulting into more powerful typhoons and more rains, all these cities are simply waiting their turn for the next disaster to happen.
... There is no short term solution - except to have prompt and better equipped rescue and relief capability, and flexible system of mobilization of civic and military assets. Reclaiming the esteros, widening / deepening of canals and constructing auxiliary flood dikes will help. Also, relocating 'informal' settlers in river banks out of harm's way will minimize would-be casualties. What else? Ready bancas, like Noah's ark.
... The long term solution is strict enforcement of logging ban with selective harvesting of trees allowed only if there is a commensurate replanting program in place. Other measures include declaring the remaining forested zones and ALL mountainous areas inalienable conservation RESERVES.
... In the 70s I used to see the Philippine landscape from the air from Cagayan in the north to Zamboanga in the south. The 'baldness' of the mountains was very obvious and it's probably worse now. It's a pity we used to fly VIP flights for politicians who were responsible for the denuding of our forest, or were in cohort with loggers who were smuggling their logs. Those politicians and their cohorts are pretty much around in the corridors of power to this day.

Dear Sir Joe:

I have had the opportunity of building the model of DD 174 USS Rizal.  The destroyer is called a four stacker destroyer who crew was mainly composed of Filipino but with American officers.

Please visit the attached web address and see for yourself what we did here in Chicago in 2008.  Until next time, may you have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year.

Fraternally yours,

Sir Felix

Sen. Miriam Santiago-Defensor - is she profound or profane ?

What about Sen Joker Arroyo and Fr. Joaquin Bernas, S.J. ?

... @ Highlights by // Guy Camacho

What has gone into their minds?

AS I WRECK THIS CHAIR By William M. Esposo The Philippine Star

What has gone into the mind of Senator Miriam Santiago to humiliate DSWD (Department of Social Welfare and Development) Secretary Dinky Soliman during the Commission on Appointments (CA) hearings — after Soliman stated that their group, the Black and White Movement (BnW), sought their guidance from the Almighty?

... @ Do you have a direct line to God?

When asked how the BnW members reached their decisions on what are right and wrong, Soliman explained that they always sought the guidance of the Almighty. Immediately Santiago went into antics mode and asked Soliman “Did God give you your appointment papers to decide on who’s good or evil? Do you have a direct line to God?” Sen. Santiago dared Soliman to present an authorization letter from God and later told the DSWD Secretary to resign.

... @ Catholic Church says nothing on attacks on those who practice Christianity

The Catholic Church leaders should have protested against Sen. Santiago’s antics that denigrated a group that professes to follow Catholic teachings — to seek the guidance of God and conform to the guidelines that God has set. The Catholic Church admits that they’re losing adherents and that fewer men enter the priesthood. Here’s a group that’s demonstrating Christian values and when they’re attacked for practicing Christianity — the Catholic Church says nothing.

... @ Sen Santiago will join soon the International Court of Justice (ICJ)

Sen. Santiago has recently been accepted in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), undeniably owed partly to the support of the President Noynoy Aquino (P-Noy) administration. Sen. Santiago has long sought the ICJ post but could not get it through the Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA) administration. Is it not the height of ingratitude for Sen. Santiago to continue to support GMA while making things more difficult for P-Noy?

... @ Sec. Soliman’s appointment a demonstration of C/Appointments’s bullying

Soliman is a vital cog in the P-Noy administration’s poverty reduction program. She’s a hard worker and is always on the job facilitating relief efforts whenever a calamity hits an area. How can Sen. Santiago and the CA use the PEACe Bonds issue against Soliman when nothing has really been established as criminal or irregular with that issue? Does the CA decide confirmations on the basis of unproved charges and disregards good job performance, as what Soliman has demonstrated in DSWD? P-Noy’s bosses, the Filipino people, should question Sen. Santiago and the CA for bullying and not confirming Sec. Soliman’s appointment.

... @ Vendetta is rooted to the resignation of the Hyatt 10 in July 2005

What really emerges in Sen. Santiago’s humiliating treatment of Sec. Soliman is that she continues to serve and protect GMA. It’s no secret that GMA and her allies have been harboring a grudge against Soliman and sharpening their knives for the time when they can thrust these through Soliman’s torso, figuratively speaking, of course. The vendetta is rooted to the resignation of the Hyatt 10, of which Dinky is a prominent member.

... @ Sen. Santiago was transformed as GMA’s defender after her son’s death in 2003

Sen. Santiago’s loyalty to GMA is astonishing. Sen. Santiago was there at the EDSA Shrine in May 2000, priming a mob to assault GMA in Malacanang. She was one of the most vicious critics of GMA until a family tragedy happened — the death of her son by gunshot wound. When GMA visited the wake of Sen. Santiago’s son, Sen. Santiago was suddenly transformed into a defender of GMA. Why did rabidly anti-GMA Miriam Santiago become rabidly pro-GMA?

... @ Mouting GMA camp’s line of “an assault on the judiciary” or “creating a constitutional crisis”

In this impeachment trial of Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice (CJ) Rene Corona, Sen. Santiago was also mouthing the GMA camp’s line of “an assault on the judiciary” or “creating a constitutional crisis” and so forth. Don’t hold your breath how she’ll vote in the impeachment trial.

... @ Sen. Joker Arroyo’s present (and recent past) actuations to protect GMA present a big puzzlement

Sen. Santiago’s transformation from rabidly anti-GMA to rabidly pro-GMA doesn’t surprise many folks as much as the transformation of Sen. Joker Arroyo into a staunch GMA defender. For those who know Sen. Joker as the human rights lawyer who defended the poor pro-bono and Ninoy Aquino and was a contributor to the People Power Revolution — his present (and recent past) actuations that protect GMA present a big puzzlement.

“What does GMA have on Joker for him to be defending her so vigorously? Why can’t Joker see GMA’s sins and the mess that she has created,” some of them ask. “How can Joker associate the son of Cory and Ninoy to a plot to establish an authoritarian regime, even say that P-Noy doesn’t live up to his mother’s standard?” others ask.

... @ GMA defender Fr Joaquin Bernas’s nephew is married to Lulli, Arroyo’s daughter

We also wonder how Fr. Joaquin Bernas, SJ can make those recent statements of his that serve the cause of GMA and impeached CJ Corona? “What has gone into Tito Joaquin’s mind?” the question is asked. Tito Joaquin is in reference to the reported favorite nephew of Fr. Bernas who is married to GMA’s daughter Lulli.

... @ In March 2010, Tito Joaquin called the S/C as Arroyo Court, in his “Shadow of Doubt”

“Ours is now more appropriately called an Arroyo court,” Fr. Bernas described the Supreme Court in his “Shadow of Doubt” March 21, 2010 Inquirer column where he warned GMA against violating the constitutional ban if she appoints Associate Justice Rene Corona to Chief Justice. How can Tito Joaquin now be supporting Corona’s cause and that of GMA on an impeachment case that’s partly based on the very same issue?

Fearing conviction, expect GMA to use all her resources to maintain the Arroyo court that she had established. Even if the trial court and the Court of Appeals find her guilty, she is banking on her Arroyo court to exonerate her.
