“Kilig” (n.) the exhilaration or elation caused by an exciting or romantic experience. Described as butterflies in your stomach 🦋 ‘kilig’ is so unique to Filipino culture that there are no exact single word translations in other cultures that encapsulate the feeling of ‘kilig’!

Ever rich in romantic traditions, notions, and folklores, we Filipinos are nothing if not romantic. Take the age-old tradition of “Harana,” wherein a man woos a woman by singing underneath her window at night to fearlessly declare his love for her. A nocturnal practice, harana was a social event where the community comes alive and can enjoy the cool breeze under the pale moonlight 🌙 filled with love and kilig in the air!

Today, the spirit of harana lives on in OPM (Original Pilipino Music) 🎶 like the classic “Ligaya” by Eraserheads, which tells the story of a guy trying to convince a girl to let him court (“ligawan”) her. The song itself is a modern-day serenade and depicts Filipinos’ lasting fascination with ‘old school romance.’ 🥀

No matter the era or expression, our fascination with love is as lively as ever, from stories of gayuma (love potions) to harana (serenade) or poetry to love songs, we will always share a common love for love!

Join Suyomano as we celebrate this Valentine’s through beloved Filipino traditions and concepts that will remind us that no one knows love and courtship like Pinoys do! 💌 Tara na’t buhayin ang kilig para sa kulturang Pilipino! 🇵🇭
