HipHop Culture CAMP early bird price extended this week!

HipHop Culture Camp will explore two elements of Hip Hop Culture: breakdancing

and Mural Art ( No spray paint). Kids will have a chance to create and express them selves while learning a little about the history of hip hop culture. The focus is on expressing who you are and where you are from, while having fun! There will be Guest mentors who are actively practicing hip hop arts.    

Parents are invited to the last class at 11:00-11:30 for a showcase of learning.

To register, you need to pay for your spot by the end of this week, either by e-transfer, or cheque or cash dropped off at Studio Alive, please email for further details!

Amber Santos began to experience Hip Hop culture when she moved to Montreal and saw graffiti and bboys and bgirls for the first time. Her love for dance accelerated when she moved to Recife, Brazil in 2002 and began to learn the regional styles (forró, frevo, côco, samba, capoeira, bgirling) from her husband and her friends, in the streets, as part of a rich, vibrant and participatory street culture. She took frevo (a carnival dance) classes at the Escola Municipal de Frevo and trained capoeira at Escola de Capoeira Perna Pesada. She 

was drawn to the hip hop movement by it's energy, political edge and aim to socially transform communities through art and bringing people together. Amber helped organize a dance event called Fuzão three years in a row. This event brought urban styles dancers from Canada, England and Spain to collaborate with local dancers and host a dance battle called Fuzão, where dancers fuse regional styles with breaking. 

    Amber has returned to the Kootenays, where she grew up, with her husband, Serjão. She is an arts mentor at SelfDesign High and has been giving workshops and organizing events locally with the Nelson District Youth Centre (mural project), Nelson Waldorf School (hip hop workshops), the Oxygen Art Centre and more. She is an artist and community organizer, organizing projects like Colours of Nelson. 

Bailey Koffigan is a student visiting for the summer from Paris, France. He is a dance lover and loves to share what he knows and has learned from some of the great European HipHop dance artists.  He practices with his crew of four, three to four times weekly, and is keen to keep dancing in Nelson!  His crew has proudly  won several  breakdancing competitions  lately. He loves kids of all ages and is ready to share.
