ARJUN,
The Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) had to plant 4000 trees in lieu of the 2000 full grown trees they cut while widening the Hubli Dharwad highway. The project is nearing completion but the land for planting the 4000 trees has not yet been identified.
I started a petition on Change.org calling on the authorities in the Forest Department and KRDCL to take immediate steps to plant the 4000 trees. More than 5000 people have signed the petition, sending thousands of emails to the concerned officials. It has also resulted in media coverage by leading newspapers.
On 22nd October and 2nd November, we met Mahesh B. Shirur, Conservator of Forests, Dharwad Circle, to deliver the petition and ask him why the Forest Department has not planted the trees even though the requisite funds have been transferred by KRDCL. He clarified that the Forest Department can only start the process of plantation after KRDCL identifies suitable land.
Armed with this information, we met R. Sreenivasa, MD, KRDCL and asked him why they have not identified the land yet. He told us that land acquisition is under progress. Once the land is acquired, KRDCL will communicate the area earmarked for avenue plantation to the Forest Department.
While this is good progress, we need to keep the pressure on. If thousands continue to send emails to the authorities, they will know that the public are keenly watching the progress of the issue.
Please sign my petition to send an email to the authorities directly.
Don’t forget to forward this mail to your friends.
Thanks in advance for taking action,
Santosh via Change.org
