Shellsnapper Shell Bolt is a very rare resource in Horizon Forbidden West. Obtained only from Shellsnappers, it must be torn off with Tear damage before the machine is destroyed. They can also be purchased from Handa or Runda, who are part of Keruf's salvagers.

A gargantuan turtle-like combat machine, the Shellsnapper is essentially what you'd get if you turned Blastoise into a Transformer. This massive machine packs some major firepower and has a huge health pool to boot, making it one of Aloy's most intimidating mechanical foes. You'll mostly come across them in desert environments, although you'll be forced to take one down during the Burning Blooms side quest.

Seeing as you'll likely come face to face with a Shellsnapper during the first half of Horizon's adventure, they can be a tough enemy to take down, with only a few of their projectiles potentially finishing off Aloy's entire health bar. The main tip here is to find as much cover as possible and to pick it apart slowly but efficiently. It shouldn't be too difficult to find a good spot to hide from ranged strikes, with Shellsnappers usually cropping up in rocky environments.

Although you can try to play a faster style here, strafing around the Shellsnapper and dodging its attacks, its shell (and turrets) will follow you as you move, meaning you won't get much downtime to heal, craft or strategise. It makes it a hard fight to dominate aggressively, especially as he hits hard.

Whichever method you choose, we're aiming for the shell bolts, frost blasters, and chillwater sac primarily here. The shell bots can be found on the Shellsnapper's shell and will remove the shell if you can get rid of all of them, giving you the opportunity to access the machine's most important components. Meanwhile, the frost blasters are found on the front of the Shellsnapper's shell and its tail. Taking them out will stop it from hitting you with brutal ranged attacks (and net you a useable heavy weapon).

Finally, the chillwater sac is located on the Shellsnapper's underbelly, so wait for the massive tortoise to stand on its hind legs and then unload. It's best to use a powerful weapon for this component, as the Shellsnapper won't let you just tee off on that spot, so a sharpshot bow or boltblaster should do the trick.

If you manage to dislodge the shell bolts, you should also get access to some weak components that will seriously hurt the Shellsnapper, so take advantage. You should be able to hit the refining core and several sparkers (which will detonate and cause huge damage if hit with an electric projectile). The kinetic dynamo is found in there too, which deals huge damage if hit.

The Shellsnapper resembles an enormous snapping turtle. Its main body is mostly unarmored, with an armored, flat skull akin to a turtle on an extendable neck, four big legs with minimal armor, a pair of Chillwater sacs and multiple ground drills on its underbelly, and a short, stout tail. The bulk of this machine comes from its shell: a massive, circular, heavily armored piece that nearly covers the whole machine and is blue with energy, which will turn orange if enough damage is applied to it and can be covered in foliage depending on how long it sits. Along the shell are four connection bolts that keep the shell on, with two extra on a smaller, elevated area behind the shell, and four frost blasters, capable of spewing a frosty mist or shooting frost grenades. Under the shell are four plasma generators that make plasma attacks, a few Sparkers, many refining cores, and a kinetic dynamo in the center that serves as the reason the Shellsnapper's shell turns damage to energy and is only exposed as a weak spot when the main shell is completely off.

Shellsnappers, being a combat class machine, were designed and produced by the rogue AI known as HEPHAESTUS during the Derangement. They were one of many kinds of 'hunter-killers' whose sole purpose was to kill humans.

Some time after the Battle of the Alight, Talanah Khane Padish and Amadis Beit Raveesh encountered a Shellsnapper in an underground lake near Sunbreak Valley, where it was seemingly guarding the entrance to a Cauldron.

This machine guards the shores and swamps of the Forbidden West. It can dig itself in and lie dormant for weeks, during which its impenetrable shell can become covered by the surrounding foliage. Despite this, it is capable of readying itself for battle in moments, effectively ambushing intruders.

Despite its size, the Shellsnapper is quite fast, and capable of leaping. It seems to be able to stretch its neck a small amount in order to bite opponents, similar to real-life snapping turtles. It is also capable of firing a power blast at targets, mainly frost balls. Not only is its shell capable of withstanding powerful attacks, but as it takes damage, it will build up a large amount of energy, and after a few more attacks, will release as a large burst, capable of stunning multiple hunters.

The Shellsnapper cannot get energy from arrow attacks, and destroying the shell bolts removes a big section of the shell, exposing the plasma generator. When the main shell is fully off, the kinetic dynamo is exposed, providing a exploitable weakspot. Shooting the Chillwater sacs disables the Shellsnapper's frost blast attacks. The frost cannons can be torn off and used as a weapon. However, the Shellsnapper's resistance to frost damage renders the cannons next to useless.

Resources are the items that you can use to buy, sell, or upgrade your gear in Horizon Forbidden West. Some of them can be found pretty much anywhere while others require going to a specific location or defeating a powerful machine.

For this to be effective you must wear the Legendary Tenakth Tactician Outfit. Its perks will make the Clawstrider a true machine killer. If possible, upgrade it at least to level IV to unlock the additional stats.

Because of the nature of the task, you are going to need a considerable amount of weapons. Have a method to deal consistent damage of each element. All of them will be extremely useful at least a couple of times.

If possible, have two or three good high tier outfits with different stats that can be switched depending on which machine you are fighting. The extra resistance stats against specific types of damage might make the difference between success and failure.

If you just want to gather resources without having to spend hours fighting machines you can just choose to play in Easy Difficulty. This makes everything quicker but please note that enemies will not present any real challenge.

Apex machines are the source of the rarest components in the game, which are required to upgrade Legendary Weapons and Outfits. Because of this, this guide focuses only on the Apex version of the listed machines.

Stalkers are very good at controlling the terrain. They will mine the area and surround you while in stealth, usually at least two of them will be attacking from different angles. Tripwires are great to protect your blind spots and to detect them.

These big, mechanical Crocodiles are always near bodies of water but they are more than capable of fighting in solid ground. Despite their size and shape, Snapmaws are unexpectedly fast and can deal a lot of damage with their jaws and tail.

Despite being small compared to many other machines, Clamberjaws can be very annoying to face. They are always in packs of three to five members, can climb trees or boulders, and also shoot multiple projectiles with their Tail Dusters.

The first thing you should worry about is getting rid of those Tail Dusters, the animation that occurs when getting hit by multiple of their projectiles might stun you for a little bit and that means certain death on the higher difficulties.

Clamberjaw Tail Duster
To get a Clamberjaw Tail Duster you must detach it from the machine before defeating it, otherwise it will be destroyed. Any bow with Tear damage will do. You can get this component from any Clamberjaw.

Crystal Braiding
You can get Volatile Sludge from an Apex Rollerback by detaching its Gravity Generator or by looting it from its body, this component persists after the machine is defeated. Its drop rate is 100%.

Rockbreaker Mining Claw
You must detach it with Tear damage before defeating the machine or it will be destroyed. Every Rockbreaker has a total of four mining claws, one for each extremity.

Volatile Sludge
There are three Volatile Sludge sources: Looting the dead body or detaching the Stamina Drain Container and the Damage Dampener Container. The drop rates are 50%, 100%, and 100% respectively.

Crystal Braiding
You can get Crystal Braiding from three different sources: Looting its body or removing the Purgewater Cannon and Tidal Disc before killing the Tideripper. The drop rates are 28%, 50% and 10% respectively.

Try to remove one of the Frost Blasters located on the edges of its shell. You can use them against it, they are particularly good against the Apex Shellsnappers due to their weakness against Frost Damage.

Thunderjaws are two-legged massive, heavily armored, combat machines that resemble the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex. They are extremely aggressive and have multiple attacks with an unexpectedly long range.

Destroy the Chillwater Unit to trigger an explosion and disable all Frost attacks. Once you do this it will only be able to do physical attacks. This is a great opportunity to use Shock or Fire Tripwires in combination with a Warrior Bow to quickly trigger an elemental state.

Scorchers look like wolves but unlike them, they do not hunt in packs. As their name suggests it, their main way of fighting is by using fire attacks to incinerate everything in their path. They are similar to a Ravager in terms of size and threat level.
