parsing numbers from strings

hi,

i am having difficulty figuring out how to parse numbers from a string
in kona. the following doesn't seem to work:

"I"$"42"
"42"
"F"$"42.0"
"42.0"

the following works for ints but not floats:

0$"42"
42
0$"42.0"
domain error
0$"42.0"

any guidence would be much appreciated.
