We invite you to join our new short-term course “Space, Time and Ways of Seeing: On theatre and cultures of performance in South Asia” by Visiting Professor Mundoli V. Narayanan.
Professor Mundoli Narayanan teaches at the Department English, University of Calicut, India. He has a PhD from the University of Exeter, UK, has also taught
at the University of Sharjah, Miyazaki International College, Japan, and has been a Fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla. He writes in both English and Malayalam and his major areas of research and publication are Theatre & Performance
Studies, traditional Indian performance and Cultural Studies. He has also done extensive documentation in association with UNESCO, CDiT, and VEDIKA.
Course: "Space,
Time and Ways of Seeing: On theatre and cultures of performance in South Asia" will provide
a general introduction to the constitutive role of space in theatre, how certain specific relationships are formed between performers and spectators in specific theatre spaces and how they go into the making of different performance cultures and styles. Sanskrit
drama, particularly Kutiyattam, the ten-centuries old form, as well as other performance traditions will be taken as exemplars for study. Short texts, performance videos, brief lectures and discussions will form the primary body of the course.
Seminar, 6 ECTS, 60 hours.
Classes: Wednesday, 17.00-20.00, room 103, from 15 of April to mid-June.
